Interaction between Nanoparticles, Membranes and Proteins: A Surface Plasmon Resonance Study

Erenildo Ferreira de Macedo et al.

Summary: Despite the promising use of nanoparticles in biomedical applications, concerns about their safety have increased due to several toxic effects. This study aimed to develop a fast and accurate method using surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) technique to characterize the interaction between nanoparticles, proteins, and lipidic membranes. The interaction of gold nanoparticles with mimetic membranes and blood proteins was evaluated, revealing differences in surface concentration density and preferential binding to specific proteins for gold and silver nanoparticles.

Nanoparticle Taylor Dispersion Near Charged Surfaces with an Open Boundary

Alexandre Vilquin et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the spatial distribution and dispersion of charged nanoparticles in near-surface shear flows under the influence of electrostatic repulsion and absorption. By varying electrolyte concentrations, the electrostatic repulsion between particles and the charged surface can be adjusted. The particles leaving the field of vision are excluded from further analysis, making the experimental ensemble equivalent to Taylor dispersion with absorption. These two factors significantly modify the particle distribution and lead to a tenfold reduction in the spreading dynamics compared to the noninteracting case.

Casimir forces out of thermal equilibrium near a superconducting transition

S. G. Castillo-Lopez et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the out-of-equilibrium Casimir pressure between two high-Tc superconducting plates. It reveals the dominance of zero-point energy in the near field and the significance of thermal effects at large interplate separations. Additionally, an abrupt change in the force is predicted when one of the plates undergoes the superconducting transition.

Casimir-Polder attraction and repulsion between nanoparticles and graphene in out-of-thermal-equilibrium conditions

G. L. Klimchitskaya et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonequilibrium Casimir-Polder force between a nanoparticle and a graphene sheet kept at different temperatures was examined using the formalism of the polarization tensor in the framework of a Dirac model. The results demonstrate that the magnitude of the force increases with the temperature of the graphene sheet. The impact of nonequilibrium conditions on the force becomes smaller at larger separations. Our findings reveal that for a graphene sheet with a lower temperature than the environment, the attractive Casimir-Polder force vanishes at a specific separation distance and becomes repulsive at larger distances. This effect has potential applications in fundamental graphene research and force control in bioelectronic microdevices.

Summary: The study investigated the low-temperature expansion of the Casimir-Polder free energy for an atom and graphene using the Poisson representation. The analysis extended to different relations between chemical potential mu and mass gap parameter m, with a focus on the dependence of graphene conductivities on mu and m. Results revealed the thermal correction for mu>m resembling T-2, and differing behavior for mu<m or mu

Nonequilibrium lateral force and torque by thermally excited nonreciprocal surface electromagnetic waves

Chinmay Khandekar et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that an isotropic dipolar particle near an asymmetric medium surface may experience lateral force and torque when the particle's temperature differs from the surrounding environment. The presence of the lateral force is associated with the asymmetric dispersion of nonreciprocal surface polaritons, while the presence of lateral torque is linked to the spin-momentum locking of surface waves. Additionally, it is found that the directions of the lateral force and torque are dependent on the constituent materials of the particles.

Summary: The experimental results show that the polarization tensor of graphene can well describe the Casimir force gradient between an Au-coated hollow glass microsphere and a graphene-coated fused silica plate, while also excluding the theoretical predictions at zero temperature. The study also found a correlation between the thermal correction to the Casimir force gradient and factors such as substrate, energy gap, and chemical potential.
