Pulsed electric field (PEF): Avant-garde extraction escalation technology in food industry

Nikunj Naliyadhara et al.

Summary: This study examines the application of Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) technology in food extraction and its effect on extraction yield and quality. The findings demonstrate that PEF treatment significantly affects the extraction yield of fruit juices, edible oils, bioactive compounds, and carbohydrates, while preserving the quality of the end product. PEF treatment also shows potential for recovering bioactive compounds from agro-processing waste. Further research and optimization of PEF parameters at an industrial scale are necessary to improve productivity.

Pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse with dilute citric acid and enzymatic hydrolysis: Use of black liquor and solid fraction for biogas production

Michelle Garcia Gomes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse with dilute citric acid solution for biogas production. The pretreated black liquor and residual solid fraction were used as substrates for biogas production. The highest concentration of total reducing sugars obtained after saccharifications was in the range of 10.7-184.8 g L-1, with sugar yields ranging from 3.5-88.8%. Biogas production from the black liquor and residual solid fraction showed promising results, indicating the feasibility of using dilute citric acid pretreatment in biorefineries.

Use of a Pulsed Electric Field to Improve the Biogas Potential of Maize Silage

Dawid Szwarc et al.

Summary: Some types of biomass require significant inputs to achieve high methane conversion rates, with lignocellulose's complex structure hindering enzyme penetration. Pretreating maize silage with a pulsed electric field resulted in increased biogas productivity, with higher carbohydrate content and methane production rate compared to the control sample.

Increasing the Biogas Potential of Rapeseed Straw Using Pulsed Electric Field Pre-Treatment

Dawid Szwarc et al.

Summary: The utilization of lignocellulosic biomass for energy production via methane fermentation is economically and environmentally justified, although its low conversion factor requires the development of new pre-treatment methods. Using a pulsed electric field (PEF) to disintegrate rapeseed straw prior to methane fermentation significantly increased biogas productivity, with the best results achieved after a 5-minute PEF pre-treatment.
