Key enzymes of sucrose metabolism play an important role in source-sink regulation of walnut fruit growth and development

Shiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between carbohydrate utilization and leaf-to-fruit ratio (LFR) by analyzing the carbohydrate content and metabolism-related enzyme activities in walnut fruits during fruit growth. The results showed that LFR significantly influenced the glucose and sucrose content, as well as the activity of sucrose synthetase (SS) in the pericarp or kernel. Furthermore, it was observed that sucrose content and SS activity decreased with increasing fruit load, while glucose and fructose content, as well as acid invertase (AI) activity, increased gradually in the pericarp. On the other hand, when the fruit number was the same, an increase in the number of leaves resulted in an increase in glucose and sucrose content, as well as SS activity in the pericarp and kernel. Additionally, fructose content and AI and sucrose phosphate synthetase (SPS) activity in the pericarp also increased. These findings suggested that AI activity played a role in improving the competitive ability of the sink when LFR was low, while high AI activity helped to provide the energy required for cell multiplication and growth during the fruit fast-growing period when LFR was high. Moreover, SS and SPS activities were found to contribute to the increase in sucrose content in the pericarp during the oil transformation period.

Differential Response of the Leaf Fruit Ratio and Girdling on the Leaf Nutrient Concentrations, Yield, and Quality of Nectarine

Vishal Singh Rana et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of leaf fruit ratio and girdling on the yield and fruit quality of nectarine peach cv. Silver King. The results showed that the leaf fruit ratio and fruit quality were correlated, and a suitable leaf fruit ratio combined with girdling could increase fruit size and weight.

Mitigation of High Solar Irradiance and Heat Stress in Kiwifruit during Summer via the Use of Alleviating Products with Different Modes of Action-Part 2 Effects on Fruit Quality, Organoleptic, and Phytochemical Properties at Harvest and after Storage

Nikoleta-Kleio Denaxa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pre-harvest alleviating products' application in the field on the yield and fruit quality attributes of 'Hayward' kiwifruit before and after storage. The results showed that the application of BlueStim (glycine betaine), Purshade (calcium carbonate), and Sun Protect (antioxidant) by foliar spraying can improve the quality characteristics of the fruit, including soluble sugars, total phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity.

Effects of Altering Carbohydrate Supply to Fruit during Development on the Carpometric and Qualitative Characteristics of Feminello Zagara Bianca Lemon

Rocco Mafrica et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of altering carbohydrate supply through branch girdling on the carpometric and qualitative characteristics of Feminello Zagara Bianca lemon fruits. The results indicated that the timing of carbohydrate supply alteration significantly impacted the characteristics of the lemons. Early girdling resulted in higher fruit weights and juice contents compared to later girdling and control trees. The availability of carbohydrates during the initial cell enlargement phase allowed for a faster degreening and ripening process, leading to lower acidity content in the early girdled fruits.

Could black anti-hail net have an extra role as an amelioration agent against heat stress in kiwifruit?

Peter A. Roussos et al.

Summary: The use of black hail nets in kiwifruit cultivation not only protects the plants from hail storms, but also mitigates the effects of high temperature and irradiance during the summer months. This study found that the net improved photosynthetic capacity, increased yield, and enhanced fruit quality. However, the storage period led to a decrease in antioxidant capacity in fruits grown under the net.

Influence of girdling on growth of litchi (Litchi chinensis) roots during cold-dependent floral induction

Pei Liu et al.

Summary: Girdling treatment during low temperature-mediated floral induction suppresses root growth, especially in distal roots, but induces proximal root growth. Fine roots exhibit faster growth rate and are more distributed in shallower soil layers, showing greater sensitivity to cold and girdling treatment. Reduction in starch and sucrose content in roots may account for the suppression of distal root growth.

Cane Girdling Influence on the Berry Texture Properties of Three Table Grape Varieties

Adrienn Maria Toth et al.

Summary: The effects of cane girdling on the berry texture characteristics were studied in three table grape cultivars. The results showed that the girdling treatment significantly increased the sugar concentration and skin thickness of the grapes, while reducing their hardness.

Girdling alters carbohydrate allocation to increase fruit size and advance harvest in tomato production

Lin Chai et al.

Summary: Girdling on tomato plants can increase fruit size, yield, and advance commercial harvest time. The appropriate girdling time is approximately 2-3 weeks after anthesis of the last truss, which can effectively regulate carbohydrate partitioning in tomato production.

Girdling stimulates anthocyanin accumulation and promotes sugar, organic acid, amino acid level and antioxidant activity in red plum: An overview of skin and pulp metabolomics

Ermes Lo Piccolo et al.

Summary: Girdling is a widely used agronomic technique to improve fruit quality characteristics, with different girdling dates leading to varying metabolic responses in the pulp and skin of red-fleshed plum. The practice induces accumulation of sugars, organic acids, amino acids, anthocyanins, and phenols in the pulp, while the skin shows significant differences in fruit quality characteristics and metabolic changes with the 4-week girdling having the most pronounced effects. Total antioxidant activity is also increased in both skin and pulp with the 4-week girdling, indicating potential benefits for red-fleshed fruit production.

Modifying Carbohydrate Supply to Fruit during Development Changes the Composition and Flavour of Actinidia chinensis var. chinensis 'Zesy002' Kiwifruit

Danielle Le Lievre et al.

Summary: This study showed that altering carbohydrate supply to kiwifruit can significantly impact growth, sugar accumulation, and maturity of the fruit. High carbohydrate fruit had increased weight and concentrations of starch, sugar, and cytokinins, while low carbohydrate fruit matured later with decreased concentrations, in comparison to control fruit. Consumers perceived control fruit as more acidic and under-ripe compared to early-high carbohydrate fruit, but sweeter than low carbohydrate fruit.

Influences of girdling and potassium treatments on fruit quality and some physiological characters of 'Fremont' mandarin variety

Tugba Ulker et al.

Summary: Cultural treatments such as girdling and foliar potassium treatment can significantly increase fruit yield and size in citrus cultivation. The combination of double stem girdling and potassium nitrate treatment had the highest impact on fruit size, while single and double girdling treatments increased fruit yield by approximately 40%. Additionally, treatments led to higher leaf nitrogen concentration and sugar content compared to the control group.
