Biodeterioration potential of algae on building materials-Model study

Michal Komar et al.

Summary: This article investigates the influence of mixed algal cultures on brick and plaster samples, revealing that algal growth leads to decreased pH values and increased water absorptivity, as well as material discoloration and the presence of various metabolites. These findings suggest that the impact of green algae on building substrates goes beyond aesthetic and indirect biodeterioration and should be further explored.

Towards understanding the link between the deterioration of building materials and the nature of aerophytic green algae

Paulina Nowicka-Krawczyk et al.

Summary: The gradual degradation of technical materials by green algae has significant economic and social implications, with green algae able to colonize and impact various terrestrial environments. Through cellular adaptations and life mechanisms, green algae are able to survive in harsh environments and accelerate the degradation of building materials.

Internal Abiotic Components That Influence the Development of Biocorrosion on ETICS Plasters

Monika Dybowska-Jozefiak et al.

Summary: The appearance of algae discoloration on the surface of the External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) is primarily influenced by external environmental factors and internal factors, with the latter often overlooked. These internal factors, including plaster properties and building details, directly or indirectly impact the humidity condition of plaster and the development of biocorrosion.

Metabolomic analysis of photosynthetic biofilms on building facades in temperate climate zones

Komar Michal et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the biodeteriorative influence of algal biofilms on building materials. The growth of algae led to changes in material color and increased water retention. However, it did not directly affect the mechanical properties of the materials. Metabolome analysis revealed the presence of various metabolites, but not those with well-documented biodeteriorative potential.

Laboratory development of subaerial biofilms commonly found on buildings. A methodological review

Elsa Fuentes et al.

Summary: The study of biodeterioration of building materials is hindered by the difficulty of accessing and sampling protected buildings. Therefore, there is a recognized need to develop a laboratory mesocosm that accurately represents nature and allows for the study and analysis of both the substrate and the organisms involved. Currently, there is a lack of consensus in the methods and protocols used in studying the formation of biofilms on building materials, which makes it difficult to compare results. This review aims to identify different methods reported in the scientific literature and organize them according to different factors, providing a guide for selecting the most appropriate methods based on different objectives.

Revisiting and reanalysing the concept of bioreceptivity 25 years on

P. Sanmartin et al.

Summary: The concept of bioreceptivity, defined by Olivier Guillitte in 1995, has not been restated, reviewed or updated since then. This paper provides a reanalysis of the concept and proposes modifications, emphasizing the need for field-based studies and the addition of a new category of bioreceptivity. Bioreceptivity remains crucial for understanding biological colonization of building materials in both new build and built heritage.
