Influence of Compositionally Graded Interface on Microstructure and Compressive Deformation of 316L Stainless Steel to Al12Si Aluminum Alloy Bimetallic Structures

Yanning Zhang et al.

Summary: The study focused on processing SS 316L to Al12Si bimetallic structures using an additive manufacturing process, creating a compositionally graded interface to address mismatch issues. Different processing parameters influenced microstructural variations and intermetallic phase formations. After heat treatment, changes in microhardness and compression strength were observed, with minimal impact on compression strength due to heat treatment.

Solidification and microstructure evolution in additively manufactured H13 steel via directed energy deposition: Integrated experimental and computational approach

Sameehan S. Joshi et al.

Summary: In this study, additive manufacturing of H13 steel was conducted using laser-aided directed energy deposition (L-DED) technique, with a focus on examining the microstructure and phase evolution under different processing parameters. The complex thermokinetics experienced during the L-DED process were simulated using a 3-dimensional multiphysics process model, which predicted important parameters related to microstructural morphology and cooling rate during solidification. The microstructure analysis revealed the presence of cellular morphology, carbide-rich precipitates, and bainite-like morphology within the ferrite/martensite grain structure, with a decrease in retained austenite and an increase in hardness observed with higher laser fluence and build height.
