Statistical evaluation of DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and Folin-Ciocalteu assays to assess the antioxidant capacity of lignins

Jessica Rumpf et al.

Summary: This research investigates four different assays to determine the antioxidant capacity of standard substances, organosolv lignins, and kraft lignins. The lowest variation was found in the ABTS assay, while the highest was found in the DPPH assay. The FRAP and FC assays show the best correlation and indicate a single electron transfer mechanism, while DPPH has a different reaction mechanism. Lignins from different sources possess different antioxidant capacities and can be used in various applications.

Potential sources and methodologies for the recovery of phenolic compounds from distillation residues of Mediterranean aromatic plants. An approach to the valuation of by-products of the essential oil market-A review

Gonzalo Ortiz de Elguea-Culebras et al.

Summary: This review compiles information on the recovery of phenolic compounds from the residues of essential oil distillation of 47 cultivated or wild-collected aromatic plants in the Mediterranean region, emphasizing new techniques for more efficient recovery. The study highlights the impact of distillation techniques and residue processing on the composition and biological properties of the phenolic fraction. The feasibility of recovering specific phenolic fractions is discussed based on residue availability, industry implementation cost, and sustainability factors such as the use of less polluting solvents like water or ethanol.

Oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes and related complications: Current therapeutics strategies and future perspectives

Jasvinder Singh Bhatti et al.

Summary: Type 2 diabetes is a rapidly rising metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and beta-cell dysfunction. High blood sugar levels lead to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, which contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Antioxidants can neutralize ROS and maintain bodily homeostasis. However, the efficacy of antioxidant therapies in preventing diabetes is conflicting in clinical evidence.

The Role of Polyphenols in Abiotic Stress Response: The Influence of Molecular Structure

Dunja Samec et al.

Summary: Abiotic stressors such as extreme temperatures, drought, flood, light, salt, and heavy metals can affect biological diversity and crop production. Plants have mechanisms to cope with these stressors, and polyphenols, a group of plant-specialized metabolites, play a role in stress protection. Different polyphenol structures have varying biological activities and roles in abiotic stress responses.
