Mammography Image-Based Diagnosis of Breast Cancer Using Machine Learning: A Pilot Study

Maha M. Alshammari et al.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning techniques to assist radiologists in reading mammograms and classifying breast tumors. Features were extracted from the region of interest that radiologists manually annotated, and these features were incorporated into a classification engine to build models. The study found that optimized Support Vector Machine or Naive Bayes algorithms achieved 100% accuracy.

True and Missed Interval Cancer in Organized Mammographic Screening: A Retrospective Review Study of Diagnostic and Prior Screening Mammograms

Tone Hovda et al.

Summary: Through exploring the radiological aspects of interval breast cancer in a population-based screening program, it was found that 24% of interval cancers were classified as missed, and three out of four true interval cancers were diagnosed in the second year of the screening interval. No statistical differences in histopathological characteristics were observed between true and missed interval cancers.

Breast cancer screening and overdiagnosis

Jean-Luc Bulliard et al.

Summary: The study focused on quantifying the variation in estimated breast cancer overdiagnosis in organised programmes, using observed and simulated data, as well as modelling to provide additional insights. Reliable observational data and modeling studies suggest that less than 10% of invasive breast cancer cases in a screening population of women aged 50 to 69 are due to overdiagnosis. Results suggest that estimates above this level may be attributed to inaccuracies in study design, directing the need for improved methodology in future research.

Use of artificial intelligence for image analysis in breast cancer screening programmes: systematic review of test accuracy

Karoline Freeman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the accuracy of artificial intelligence in breast cancer mammography screening practice. The evidence does not yet support the use of AI to replace the double reading of radiologists in screening programs, and further prospective studies are needed to determine the potential benefits of AI in clinical practice.
