Role of Vacuolar Membrane Transport Systems in Plant Salinity Tolerance

Mohamed Magdy F. Mansour

Summary: Salinity stress adversely affects plant productivity, and understanding plant defense mechanisms against it is crucial. The vacuolar transport system plays a key role in plant salinity tolerance by maintaining a high cytosolic K+/Na+ ratio, sequestering Na+ and Cl- into vacuoles, and regulating other salinity responsive pathways. However, more research is needed to explore the regulation and functions of certain vacuolar transporters under salinity stress. The activities of vacuolar transporters are upregulated in response to salinity stress, and manipulating the genes encoding these proteins can improve plant salinity tolerance. Further studies should focus on transgene pyramiding to develop genotypes with stronger salinity tolerance and productivity.

Mutation of the ARA7/AtRabF2b Gene, That Increases the Content of the Ara7 Protein Regulating Endocytic Trafficking Pathways, Improves Salt Tolerance of the Arabidopsisthaliana (L.) Heynh Plants

O. Sergienko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between endocytosis, ion homeostasis, and salt tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Mutant plants with an insertion in the ARA7/AtRabF gene were studied, which led to changes in vesicular transport regulation. The mutation resulted in increased expression of the AtARA7 protein and significant phenotypic changes related to salt stress. Electron microscopy revealed changes in root cell ultrastructure, indicating alterations in endocytosis pathway and vacuole formation dynamics. The mutants exhibited improved salt tolerance compared to wild-type plants, with increased root and leaf mass, higher K+ content, and lower average Na+ content. These changes are likely influenced by perturbations in vesicular transport and autophagy.

Exogenous application of agmatine improves water stress and salinity stress tolerance in turnip (Brassica rapa L.)

Rewaa S. Jalal et al.

Summary: This study found that foliar application of agmatine can improve the growth and yield of turnip under water and salt stress conditions. Water and high salt stress had negative effects on growth parameters and physiological and biochemical traits. However, under moderate water and low salt stress, agmatine increased water use efficiency and antioxidant enzyme activity, alleviating the adverse effects of stress.

Effects of Exogenous Melatonin on Root Physiology, Transcriptome and Metabolome of Cotton Seedlings under Salt Stress

Wenjing Duan et al.

Summary: Melatonin can alleviate salt stress-induced damage to cotton seedling roots. It enhances antioxidant enzyme activities and the contents of soluble sugar, soluble protein, and K+, while reducing the accumulation of H2O2 and MDA. Melatonin also increases auxin, brassinosteroids, gibberellin, and its own content, and promotes root development. The transcriptomic and metabolomic results indicate that exogenous melatonin mitigates salt-stress-induced inhibition of plant root development by regulating various gene expressions.
