Research advances of ammonia oxidation microorganisms in wastewater: metabolic characteristics, microbial community, influencing factors and process applications

Weihua Zhao et al.

Summary: Ammonia oxidation is a key step in the global nitrogen cycle, carried out by various types of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms (AOMs). This review discusses the metabolic characteristics, microbial community, and influencing factors of AOMs. It highlights the process applications of nitrification/denitrification, nitritation/denitrification, nitritation/anammox, and partial denitrification/anammox in wastewater treatment systems. The future development of nitrogen removal processes using AOMs is expected, with a focus on the enrichment of comammox, stable nitritation through the inhibition of comammox and NOB activity, and the promising use of AnAOB in municipal wastewater for anammox.

Production, Application, and Efficacy of Biodefoamers from Bacillus, Aeromonas, Klebsiella, Comamonas spp. Consortium for the Defoamation of Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater

Cynthia Dlangamandla et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the production of biodefoamers by evaluating foam reduction efficiency and foam collapse of isolates in poultry slaughterhouse wastewater. The results showed that the bacterial isolates produced biodefoamers with high foam reduction efficiency and low foam collapse rate, comparable to synthetic defoamers.

Advanced technologies for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment: A systematic review

Bakar Radhi Baker et al.

Summary: This article discusses technologies used for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment over the past 10 years and highlights the need for different treatment options depending on the characteristics of the wastewater. While each technology has its advantages and limitations, advanced technologies perform well in terms of wastewater recycling, waste reduction, and cost-effective waste management in poultry slaughterhouses.

Treatment of Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater (PSW) Using a Pretreatment Stage, an Expanded Granular Sludge Bed Reactor (EGSB), and a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

Honeil Basile Meyo et al.

Summary: This study successfully treated poultry slaughterhouse wastewater (PSW) by combining a biological pretreatment stage, an expanded granular sludge bed reactor (EGSB), and a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The system achieved contaminant removal rates exceeding 97%, meeting the discharge standards set by the City of Cape Town (CoCT). The EGSB and MBR played key roles in reducing concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and fats, oil, and grease (FOG) to acceptable levels, demonstrating an effective and low-cost method for treating medium- to high-strength wastewater.

Performance evaluation and kinetic modeling of down-flow high-rate anaerobic bioreactors for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment

Mahomet Njoya et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the treatment of poultry slaughterhouse wastewater using two new down-flow high-rate anaerobic bioreactor systems, which demonstrated good performance with removal percentages of BOD5, COD, and FOG exceeding 95%. The study analyzed the kinetic parameters of these two bioreactors using the modified Stover-Kincannon and Grau second-order multi-component substrate models, providing insight for their design and performance prediction.
