Chlorhexidine versus organoselenium for inhibition of S. mutans biofilm, an in vitro study

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of chlorhexidine diaceteate varnish and an organoselenium sealant in preventing S. mutans biofilm formation on human teeth. The results showed that both materials were not effective in inhibiting S. mutans biofilm attachment.

Evidence on the Use of Mouthwash for the Control of Supragingival Biofilm and Its Potential Adverse Effects

Summary: Antimicrobial mouthwash, when used with mechanical removal, is effective in controlling supragingival biofilm but has limited effects on subgingival biofilm. It primarily inhibits biofilm accumulation and prevents gingivitis, and also has cariostatic activities. However, using it on mature oral biofilms may result in adverse reactions, such as the emergence of resistant strains and increased pathogenicity. In the future, oral biofilm control strategies may focus on reducing biofilm formation rather than complete elimination, to preserve the benefits of normal oral microflora.
