Accuracy of the Sentence-BERT Semantic Search System for a Japanese Database of Closed Medical Malpractice Claims

Naofumi Fujishiro et al.

Summary: In this study, a similar text retrieval system was developed using Sentence-BERT (SBERT) for a database of closed medical malpractice claims, and its retrieval accuracy was investigated. Each case in the database was assigned a short Japanese summary of the accident and two labels indicating the category and process. The accuracy of the similar text retrieval system using the trained SBERTs was significantly higher than that of other systems.

Changes resulting from the implementation of the new EU Clinical Trial Regulation 536/2014 from the perspective of patients

Ingrid Klingmann et al.

Summary: Regulation (EU) 536/2014 brings important innovations for patients in clinical trials and those in need of innovative therapies, including patient protection, data use conditions, and transparency. The introduction of the CTIS improves ongoing trial transparency, but redacting confidential information and delaying data publication may limit transparency. Providing trial summaries and results in layman's language within one year is a major transparency improvement, although the involvement of patients in trial protocol design and ethical review is not mandatory.

Reducing Literature Screening Workload With Machine Learning A Systematic Review of Tools and Their Performance

Tanja Burgard et al.

Summary: In our era of accelerated accumulation of knowledge, the manual screening of literature for eligibility is becoming too labor-intensive. Recent advances in machine learning and natural language processing promise to reduce the workload by automatically detecting unseen references. This review provides an overview of 15 tools for screening automation and discusses their characteristics and performance.

After the four-year transition period: Is the European Union's Medical Device Regulation of 2017 likely to achieve its main goals?

Kosta Shatrov et al.

Summary: The implementation of the European Union Medical Device Regulation (MDR) has brought significant regulatory changes to the medical device industry. While the medium- and long-term impacts of the MDR are still uncertain, there is a divergence of opinions regarding its effects on free trade and patient safety. Through an analysis of the MDR, it is suggested that it is likely to strengthen the EU internal market, but its impact on patient safety remains unclear without comprehensive studies based on empirical data.

MedGraph: A semantic biomedical information retrieval framework using knowledge graph embedding for PubMed

Islam Akef Ebeid

Summary: In this study, the semantic search and retrieval problem in biomedical digital libraries is investigated. The authors introduce a method called MedGraph, which is based on knowledge graph embedding and provides semantic relevance retrieval and ranking for biomedical literature. The approach is evaluated by comparing it with PubMed's Best Match algorithm and a traditional TF-IDF-based algorithm. Results show that the semantic approach based on knowledge graph modeling offers better search relevance results in biomedical digital libraries.

Unsupervised Fusion Feature Matching for Data Bias in Uncertainty Active Learning

Wei Huang et al.

Summary: This article proposes a feature-matching-based uncertainty method to alleviate the data bias issue by resampling selected uncertainty data. To meet the requirement of no additional costs, the authors specially designed an unsupervised fusion feature matching (UFFM), and redesigned classic uncertainty methods for more complex visual tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other similar techniques.

Intra-articular hyaluronic acid in knee osteoarthritis: clinical data for a product family (ARTHRUM), with comparative meta-analyses

Patrice Vincent

Summary: Viscosupplementation with hyaluronic acid (HA) injections is widely used to reduce pain in osteoarthritis (OA). A comparative review of ARTHERUM devices and other equivalent IA HA devices showed that ARTHERUM was as effective if not better in reducing pain and improving function over a six-month period. The risk benefit ratio favored the use of viscosupplementation with ARTHERUM due to good tolerance and efficacy results.

A comparison of automatic Boolean query formulation for systematic reviews

Harrisen Scells et al.

Summary: Systematic reviews target highly focused research questions and require expertise in developing complex Boolean queries. Computational adaptations of information specialists' query formulation methods have been proposed to provide a starting point for query development. The objective method is more effective for query formulation alone, while the conceptual method is better for manual query refinement.
