Antimicrobial Management of Skin and Soft Tissue Infections among Surgical Wards in South Africa: Findings and Implications

Atlanta B. Makwela et al.

Summary: Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are common infectious diseases that often require antibiotics. However, the overprescribing of antibiotics for SSTIs can lead to antibiotic resistance. Monitoring the alignment of prescribing practices with treatment guidelines is important for improving future care.

Summary: South Africa has faced several major health issues over the past 30 years, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, chronic illnesses, and injuries. Using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study 2019, the study assessed the country's health trends and progress towards sustainable development goals. The findings suggest that while there have been improvements in HIV/AIDS-related conditions, many provinces still lag behind in key areas.

Summary: Data on antimicrobial consumption among paediatric population in public hospitals in South Africa is limited. This study aimed to quantify antimicrobial usage, identify and classify which antimicrobials are used based on the WHO AWaRe list. The study found that antimicrobial prescribing is common among paediatric patients in South Africa and interventions should be targeted to improve prescribing practices and encourage greater use of oral antibiotics.
