An n-Type Polythiophene Derivative with Excellent Thermoelectric Performance

Sihui Deng et al.

Summary: A non-fused-ring strategy was used to design n-type conjugated polymers by introducing electron-withdrawing groups to a non-fused-ring polythiophene backbone. The resulting polymer, n-PT1, showed low energy levels, high electron mobility, and high crystallinity. After n-doping, n-PT1 exhibited excellent thermoelectric performance with the highest reported power factor for n-type conjugated polymers.

High-Performance n-Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors Enabled by Aqueous Solution Processing of Amphiphilicity-Driven Polymer Assembly

Dahyun Jeong et al.

Summary: Despite the limited number of high-performance n-type materials, this study develops a series of naphthalene diimide-based polymers with asymmetrically branched oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains for green-solvent-processed, high-performance n-type organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The incorporation of branched OEG side chains enables solubility in eco-friendly ethanol/water solvent mixtures and produces highly ordered polymer packing with excellent lateral charge transport. The resulting n-type OECT exhibits the best electrical/electrochemical performance in the family, indicating important guidelines for the design of n-type organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors with excellent OECT characteristics.

Fluorination-Induced Charge Trapping and Operational Instability in Conjugated-Polymer Field-Effect Transistors

Hansol Lee et al.

Summary: The effect of fluorination of a conjugated polymer backbone on charge trapping and the operational stability of organic field-effect transistors is investigated. It is found that although fluorination can increase charge carrier mobility, it leads to poor operational stability due to the presence of a greater degree of shallow trapping and the presence of minority charge carriers.

n-Type Organic and Polymeric Semiconductors Based on Bithiophene Imide Derivatives

Kui Feng et al.

Summary: In the last three decades, there has been significant progress in p-type organic and polymeric semiconductors, while development in n-type analogues has been limited by the scarcity of highly electron-deficient building blocks. Imide-functionalized arenes, such as NDI and PDI, have shown promise in developing n-type semiconductors, but face challenges like steric hindrance and backbone distortion. Designing novel imide-functionalized heteroarenes like BTI, and optimizing their structure, has led to the development of high-performance n-type semiconductors with suppressed FMO levels.

Amphipathic Side Chain of a Conjugated Polymer Optimizes Dopant Location toward Efficient N-Type Organic Thermoelectrics

Jian Liu et al.

Summary: The use of amphipathic side chains in an n-type donor-acceptor copolymer selectively increases the Seebeck coefficient and improves the power factor by a factor of approximately 5. The alkyl spacer reduces energetic disorder, controls dopant sites, and minimizes the adverse influence of counterions. This molecular strategy optimizes the Seebeck coefficient and offers a new approach to improving n-type polymeric thermoelectrics by optimizing dopant location.

Acene Ring Size Optimization in Fused Lactam Polymers Enabling High n-Type Organic Thermoelectric Performance

Hu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, three n-type fused lactam semiconducting polymers were synthesized via a transition-metal free aldol polycondensation method, showing progressively larger electron affinities as the central acene core size decreases. The N-N and A-N polymers exhibited the highest charge carrier mobilities and power factors among the three polymers, representing promising candidates for high-performance n-type materials in thermoelectric applications. The results highlight the effectiveness of modulating the size of the central acene ring as a molecular design strategy to optimize the electronic and thermoelectric performance of conjugated polymers.
