Vocalization by extant nonavian reptiles: A synthetic overview of phonation and the vocal apparatus

Summary: Nonavian reptiles are considered to use vocal signals less frequently compared to birds and mammals, but certain taxa in all three reptilian clades emit distress calls and advertisement calls through modifications of the upper respiratory tract. There is no central tendency in acoustic mechanisms or vocal apparatus structure, with evidence pointing to multiple origins of true vocal abilities within these lineages. This diversity in sound producing apparatus and the increasing importance of vocalization in reptile communication suggest that they play a significant role in the evolution of vocalization in amniotes.
