Functional genomic analysis of Candida albicans protein kinases reveals modulators of morphogenesis in diverse environments

Yunjin Lee et al.

Summary: Candida albicans is a major cause of mycotic infection, and the ability to transition between yeast and filamentous forms is crucial for its virulence. This study identified the gene orf19.3751 as a negative regulator of filamentation in C. albicans and revealed its role in cell cycle regulation. Additionally, the study found that the kinases Ire1 and protein kinase A (Tpk1 and Tpk2) have dual roles in the morphogenesis of C. albicans, acting as negative regulators of wrinkly colony formation on solid medium but positive regulators of filamentation in liquid medium. Overall, this research provides insights into the signaling pathways governing morphogenesis in C. albicans.

The protein kinase Ire1 has a Hac1-independent essential role in iron uptake and virulence of Candida albicans

Bernardo Ramirez-Zavala et al.

Summary: Protein kinases play important roles in the adaptation of Candida albicans to iron limitation. The protein kinase Ire1 is crucial for the growth of C. albicans under iron-limiting conditions, as it is required for the localization of the high-affinity iron permease Ftr1 to the cell membrane. Ire1 functions independently of endoplasmic reticulum stress and is essential for the virulence of C. albicans.

Antifungal susceptibility pattern of Candida isolated from cutaneous candidiasis patients in eastern Guangdong region: A retrospective study of the past 10 years

Hazrat Bilal et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the occurrence, causes, and antifungal susceptibility pattern of cutaneous candidiasis in Shantou, China. The study found that cutaneous candidiasis had a prevalence rate of 22.29%, with Candida albicans being the most common species. The majority of cases occurred in the adult age group, and most isolates were susceptible to antifungal drugs, except for some C. glabrata isolates that showed resistance to miconazole.
