Disentangling the coupling relationships between functional denitrifiers and nitrogen transformation during cattle-manure and biochar composting: A novel perspective

Liting Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between denitrifiers and N-transformation during cattle-manure and biochar composting using DNA, RNA, and enzyme analyses. Amino sugar-N and hydrolysable unknown-N were identified as the main components mediating NH4+-N in cattle-manure and biochar composting, respectively. The presence of biochar suppressed certain genes and enzyme activity related to denitrification and influenced the abundance and diversity of denitrifier taxa.

Nitrogen loss, nitrogen functional genes, and humification as affected by hydrochar addition during chicken manure composting

Guangchun Shan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of hydrochar addition on nitrogen (N) transformation, N functional genes, and humification during chicken manure composting. The addition of 10% hydrochar reduced cumulative ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide emissions by 55.24% and 45.30%, respectively, and N losses by 32.07%. Hydrochar reduces NH3 emissions during composting owing to its acid-carbon properties that lower the pH of the com-posting pile and promote ammonia oxidation. Moreover, hydrochar addition enhances the humification of the composting pile and significantly increases the content of humic substances. Furthermore, after hydrochar addition, the germination index of the compost product reached >80% 10 days earlier.

Integrated application effects of biochar and plant residue on ammonia loss, heavy metal immobilization, and estrogen dissipation during the composting of poultry manure

Fengsong Zhang et al.

Summary: Inadequate handling of poultry manure can lead to significant environmental pollution. Composting poultry manure with corn stalks, mushroom residues, and rice husk biochar can effectively degrade estrogen, stabilize heavy metals, and reduce ammonia emissions. Biochar shows a promotional effect on microbial degradation of estrogen, indicating its potential in improving environmental quality during composting.
