Response of nitritation granules to anaerobically pre-treated municipal wastewater at low temperatures in a continuous-flow reactor

Wenru Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of nitritation granules to influent shift from artificial low-ammonium wastewater to anaerobically pre-treated municipal wastewater (MWWpre-treated) at low temperatures. Results showed that MWWpre-treated caused the outgrowth of filamentous bacteria on the granule surface and developed into finger-like structures, which resulted in the decrease of the overall granular sludge settleability. The functional and microbial differentiation between the newly formed fluffy exterior and the original compact granule was observed, with the fluffy exterior primarily dominated by genus Flavobacterium and functioning as COD removal, while the nitrifiers were still located in the compact core and performed nitritation.

Enhanced aerobic granulation for treating low-strength wastewater in an anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic sequencing batch reactor by selecting slow-growing organisms and adding carriers

Dongbo Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that adding carriers in AN/O/AX_SBR can shorten the maturation period of AGS and improve its physical strength. The technology can simultaneously achieve nitrification, endogenous denitrification, and phosphorus removal, with removal efficiencies of total nitrogen and total phosphorus above 70% and 80%, respectively.

Improving nitrogen and phosphorus removal and sludge reduction in new integrated sewage treatment facility by adjusting biomass concentration

Weiqing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study utilized a micro-pressure swirl reactor (MPSR) to treat sewage and investigated the effect of different biomass concentrations (MLSS concentration) on the treatment performance. The results showed that the nitrogen and phosphorus removal, as well as sludge reduction, increased and then decreased with increasing MLSS concentration, with the optimal range being 7.98-11.45 g/L. Parameters related to sludge reduction were further examined and the content of extracellular polymeric substances and sludge dehydrogenase activity were found to be correlated with sludge reduction. Microbial analysis revealed that beneficial microorganisms were enriched in the MPSR at suitable MLSS concentrations, facilitating nitrogen and phosphorus removal and sludge reduction.

Cultivation of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) using different sewage sludge inoculums: process performance and microbial community analysis

Mohd. W. Mirza et al.

Summary: The study found that anaerobic sludge with biomass carrier resulted in the highest ammonia removal rate and close to stoichiometric nitrite to ammonia utilization ratio for anammox cultivation. The co-existence of anammox bacteria with denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms provides new possibilities for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphate removal.

Effect of feeding strategy and organic loading rate on the formation and stability of aerobic granular sludge

Oliver Terna Iorhemen et al.

Summary: The experiment results showed that using the slow anaerobic feeding strategy can form a stable aerobic granular sludge, while high OLR can form granules quickly but may lead to instabilities. Research recommends forming granules quickly with high OLR and then reducing the OLR to maintain stability.

Insight into the role of exopolysaccharide in determining the structural stability of aerobic granular sludge

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the significant contribution of exopolysaccharide (PS) to maintaining the structural stability of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) by affecting hydrophobicity interactions and hydrogen bonds system, which are crucial parameters for gel properties. The hydrolysis of PS led to a decrease in sludge hydrophobicity, granular gel mechanical strength, and an increase in surface free energy, ultimately impacting the granular stability. Additionally, the existence of PS and PN conjugates in the EPS matrix was confirmed, proposing a new insight into the EPS system theory and granular stability mechanism.

Summary: The study revealed a positive correlation between EPS content and sludge granulation, with increased protein concentration facilitating microbial aggregation and sludge granulation. Environmental factors affect the properties of EPS, with different types of sludge generating varying levels of EPS and protein concentrations.
