Sulfonated carbon: synthesis, properties and production of biodiesel

Jhessica M. Fonseca et al.

Summary: Heterogeneous acid catalysts, such as sulfonated carbons, are potential substitutes for homogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production due to their ability to perform esterification and transesterification reactions simultaneously, ease of separation and recovery, and possible reuse in other cycles. The parameters of the sulfonation process directly affect the acid density and final biodiesel yield. Sulfonated carbons demonstrate similar or superior catalytic activity compared to other heterogeneous acid catalysts in synthesizing biodiesel from different oils.

Machine learning prediction of bio-oil characteristics quantitatively relating to biomass compositions and pyrolysis conditions

Tonghuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study utilized different biomass compositions and pyrolysis conditions to predict the characteristics of bio-oil accurately. It found that ultimate analysis is better for predicting yield, viscosity, and oxygen-carbon ratio, while chemical compositions analysis is better for predicting calorific value and hydrogen-carbon ratio. The research provides important insights for predicting the characteristics of bio-oil obtained from biomass with different compositions under various pyrolysis conditions.

One-step synthesis of biomass-based sulfonated carbon catalyst by direct carbonization-sulfonation for organosolv delignification

Wendy Mateo et al.

Summary: The biomass-based sulfonated carbon catalyst (SCC) was prepared from corncob via direct sulfuric acid carbonization-sulfonation treatment, with an optimal condition of 100 degrees C and 5.78 h for maximizing yield and SO3H density. In ethanol organosolv lignin, the highest EOL yield of 63.56% was achieved with 20% SCC loading.

Furfural acetalization over Keggin heteropolyacid salts at room temperature: effect of cesium doping

Marcio Jose da Silva et al.

Summary: Furfural is an important platform molecule in biorefinery with various applications across different industries. The conversion of Keggin heteropolyacids (HPAs) to solid salts by Cesium ions allows for insolubility in polar solvents, enabling easy recycling. Among the HPAs studied, Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 showed the highest activity and selectivity towards alkyl furfural acetals.

Can Bronsted acids catalyze the epoxidation of allylic alcohols with H2O2? With a little help from the proton, the H3PMo12O40 acid did it and well

Castelo Bandane Vilanculo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic activity of different acids in epoxidation reactions of terpene alcohols, with H3PMo12O40 showing the highest activity and selectivity towards nerol epoxide. The results suggest that Molybdenum and protons in H3PMo12O40 are the main active sites in this reaction.

Monoterpenes etherification reactions with alkyl alcohols over cesium partially exchanged Keggin heteropoly salts: effects of catalyst composition

Marcio Jose da Silva et al.

Summary: The study found that phosphotungstate is the most effective Keggin heteropolyacid catalyst, and Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 salt is the most active and selective catalyst. Investigation on the effects of reaction parameters such as temperature, time, catalyst load, etc. showed that the simultaneous presence of cesium ions and protons plays an important role in the reaction, with an optimal molar ratio of 2.5-0.5. The Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 salt can be efficiently recovered and reused without losing catalytic activity.
