Diet of Bottlenose Dolphin, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821), in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea

Alessandra Neri et al.

Summary: Based on the analysis of stomach contents of 28 dolphins stranded along the Tuscan coast, it was found that they mainly feed on European hake and conger eel and are capable of nocturnal hunting. Additionally, female dolphins prey on a significantly higher quantity of octopods compared to males.

Determinants of group size in the common bottlenose dolphins: the role of water temperature and noise

G. La Manna et al.

Summary: Understanding the influence of environmental, social, and anthropogenic factors on group living is crucial for ecological and management purposes. In this study, the relationship between group size of a common bottlenose dolphin population in the Mediterranean Sea and various factors such as prey availability, social context, and noise levels was investigated. The results showed that water temperature, noise, and social factors were the main influencers of group size, with temperature and noise affecting both intra-population and individual levels.

Not only wide range shifts: Marine warming and heat waves influence spatial traits of a mediterranean common bottlenose dolphin population

Gabriella La Manna et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of temperature and marine heat waves on the spatial traits of a common bottlenose dolphin population in the Mediterranean Sea was investigated. The results showed that the increase in sea surface temperature negatively affected dolphin occurrence and group size. Additionally, individual home range size increased significantly during the period with higher temperature and longer MHWs. These findings highlight the importance of considering the warming effects on dolphin spatial traits in coastal management efforts.

Acoustic detection of bottlenose dolphin depredation on nets and implications for conservation

G. La Manna et al.

Summary: Understanding the depredation process is crucial for managing conflicts between wildlife and human activities. This study used passive acoustic monitoring devices to estimate the consistency between dolphin acoustic detection and direct observations and catch measurements in the Mediterranean Sea. Factors influencing depredation were evaluated, and it was found that the measurement of catch was more realistically related to depredation than direct dolphin observations. Furthermore, dolphin depredation was found to be related to the duration of the fishing operation.

Identifying suitable areas for common bottlenose dolphin in anthropized waters

Guilherme Maricato et al.

Summary: Understanding the processes that determine species occurrence is crucial for effective management, especially for species exposed to human activities. This study examined how environmental factors and human activities impact the habitat suitability and residence patterns of bottlenose dolphins in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The results revealed that primary productivity, seabed slope, and port activities significantly influenced dolphins' habitat suitability.

Environmental impacts of increasing leisure boating activity in Mediterranean coastal waters

Arnau Carreno et al.

Summary: Leisure boating in the Mediterranean Sea has various ecological impacts, ranging from anchoring impacts on seagrass meadows to motor noise disturbance. There is a need to raise awareness of the potential impacts and implement management measures to mitigate these impacts. Collaboration among marine scientists, engineers, policymakers, and the boating industry is essential to reduce the impacts of recreational boating worldwide.
