J-aggregates of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)-porphyrin. An overview of the supramolecular self-assembling mechanism

Roberto Zagami et al.

Summary: Under specific conditions, TPPS4 can self-organize into J-aggregates, where porphyrins align in an edge-to-edge geometry. The self-assembly is hierarchical and the kinetics depend on the mixing protocols. The rate-determining step is an autocatalytic growth leading to the formation of J-aggregates of varying sizes, influenced by experimental parameters and different ionic species.

Structure and principles of self-assembly of giant sea urchin type sulfonatophenyl porphine aggregates

Marijus Pleckaitis et al.

Summary: The study investigates the molecular self-assembly principles leading to the formation of giant hierarchical structures in TPPS4 aggregates. Various microscopy techniques were used to analyze the fluorescence properties and structural features of the aggregates. The investigation reveals distinct aggregate types, including chiral nanotubes and nanogranular aggregates, in the hierarchical GSU structure formed by TPPS4 molecules.

Chirality transfer from a 3D macro shape to the molecular level by controlling asymmetric secondary flows

Semih Sevim et al.

Summary: This article presents an example of chirality transfer from the chiral shape of a 3D helical channel to chiral supramolecular aggregates, where the handedness of the helical channel determines the direction of enantioselection. By combining numerical simulations and experimental data, the authors demonstrate the possibility of controlling enantioselectively molecular processes at the nanometer scale by modulating the geometry and operating conditions of fluidic reactors.

Effects of the Mixing Protocol on the Self-Assembling Process of Water Soluble Porphyrins

Maria Angela Castriciano et al.

Summary: The hierarchical self-assembling kinetics of porphyrin into J-aggregates under acidic conditions with high ionic strength, and the effect of adding a chiral templating agent (tartrate) on the final nanostructures, were investigated. The study also evaluated the impact of changing the mixing order of components in the solution on the kinetic parameters and the expression of chirality in the J-aggregates. The results showed that only preconditioning the chiral tartrate anion with porphyrin resulted in CD spectra reflecting the handedness of the chiral inducer, indicating a specific mechanistic scheme involving ion pairs or dimers in the aggregation process.

Selective Bromination of β-Positions of Porphyrin by Self-Catalytic Behaviour of VOTPP: Facile Synthesis, Electrochemical Redox Properties and Catalytic Application

Mannar R. Maurya et al.

Summary: The oxidation vanadium(IV) complex of beta-octabromo-meso-tetraphenylporphyrin was successfully synthesized and its structure confirmed by single crystal X-ray study. This catalytic method showed high efficiency and importance in selective bromination, with high turnover frequency and recyclability of the catalyst. The complex exhibited superior catalytic performance due to its electron deficient nature and robust nonplanar structure compared to the precursor.
