Phytic acid empowered two nanos ?Polypyrrole tunnels and transition Metal-(Oxy)hydroxide Sheets? in a single platform for unmitigated redox water splitting

Prakash Chandra Lohani et al.

Summary: Here, we present a novel perspective for designing transition metal oxyhydroxide bifunctional electrocatalysts by incorporating green and renewable biological phytic acid into polypyrrole nanotunnels and fastening luminal-abluminal NiCo-(oxy)hydroxide nanosheets on a carbon cloth. The use of phytic acid cross-links metal ions, confining their migration and aggregation, leading to more active sites for the evolution of H2 and O2. Additionally, the incorporation of phytic acid in PPy networks enhances hydrophilicity and electrode kinetics for the HER and OER. The bifunctional electrocatalyst demonstrates its potential as a replacement for noble metal catalysts, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with 100% Faradaic efficiency at an ultralow cell voltage of 1.51 V.

Integrated core-shell assembly of Ni3S2 nanowires and CoMoP nanosheets as highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Milan Babu Poudel et al.

Summary: This paper describes the assembly of a superior bifunctional electrocatalyst based on a CoMoP/Ni3S2 multicomponent heterointerface. The resulting three dimensional CoMoP/Ni3S2 core-shell heterostructure exhibits remarkable electrocatalysis for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The CoMoP/Ni3S2 electrocatalyst requires low overpotentials for HER and OER, demonstrating its potential for efficient water splitting.

Modulating metal-organic frameworks for catalyzing acidic oxygen evolution for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis

Xiaomin Xu et al.

Summary: Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is a promising technology for green hydrogen production, but the slow reaction kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an acidic environment hinders its practical viability. Noble metal-based catalysts like iridium and ruthenium are effective for the acidic OER, but their low abundance and high cost pose challenges for their use in PEM electrolyzers. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a platform for designing efficient and cost-effective acidic OER catalysts, with promising future research directions towards better catalysts for operation in acidic environments and PEM devices.
