Study of the coalescence phenomena in biogenic nano-hydroxyapatite produced by controlled calcination processes at low temperature

Dorian F. Canon-Davila et al.

Summary: The coalescence phenomenon of nanocrystals generated by thermal treatments was investigated in hydroxyapatite samples derived from bovine bone. The temperature effect on the coalescence of HAp nanocrystals was examined by calcining the samples at temperatures ranging from 400 to 720 degrees C. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed four thermal transition events where HAp nanocrystals coalesce. Infrared analysis showed a decrease in the full width at half maximum of the phosphate band with increasing calcination temperature. X-ray diffraction peaks exhibited minima values at the coalescence events, while unit cell volumes showed an opposite trend.

Comparison of the Morphological and Structural Characteristic of Bioresorbable and Biocompatible Hydroxyapatite-Loaded Biopolymer Composites

Monika Furko et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of wet chemical preparation parameters on the formation of different CaP phases and compared their morphological and structural characteristics. The findings showed that the shape and crystallinity of CaP particles were strongly dependent on post-treatment methods, with nanoscale carbonated hydroxyapatite successfully embedded in biopolymers to produce composite fibers using electrospinning. SEM images confirmed the attachment of cHAp particles and revealed partial coverage of fibers with cHAp clusters in the biodegradable cHAp-biopolymer composites.

Synthesis and characterization of bioinspired nano-hydroxyapatite by wet chemical precipitation

Omar M. Gomez-Vazquez et al.

Summary: In this study, nanometric hydroxyapatite was synthesized by wet chemical precipitation using a calcium hydroxide precursor obtained from eggshells. The synthesized crystals exhibited irregular-spherical morphologies with a diameter ranging from 10 to 90 nm, and contained multiple elements similar to those found in mammalian bones. Commercial synthetic hydroxyapatite, on the other hand, formed micron-sized flakes clusters with only calcium and phosphorus ions present.
