Metal-organic frameworks in separations: A review

Sepideh Khaki Firooz et al.

Summary: High permeability and selective metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with designable functionality are possible to be designed. MOFs have various applications in separations, including gas adsorption/separations, membranes, gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), water harvesting, and the computer/machine learning design. The specific structural motifs of MOFs are required for each application, along with relevant properties such as polarity, temperature stability, solvent stability, pore size, pore volume, and surface area. MOFs used for gas adsorption/separations can differ from those used in membranes or as chromatographic stationary phases. MOFs have been used as general adsorbents, water harvesting materials, and also have potential analytical applications. The automated design of MOFs with desired properties using computational design and machine learning is a new focus.
