Wide-angle polarization selectivity based on anomalous defect mode in photonic crystal containing hyperbolic metamaterials

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: In this work, a defect layer containing hyperbolic metamaterials was introduced into a 1D photonic crystal to achieve an anomalous defect mode with polarization-sensitive characteristics, addressing the challenge of polarization selectivity. The polarization-sensitive defect mode enables wide-angle polarization selectivity, providing a new route for designing wide-angle linear polarizers.

Beyond Q: The Importance of the Resonance Amplitude for Photonic Sensors

Donato Conteduca et al.

Summary: Resonant photonic sensors have significant applications in personalized healthcare diagnostics and environmental monitoring. However, there is currently a lack of comprehensive theoretical models for understanding the impact of practical limitations such as losses. In this study, a new model is proposed, which reveals that losses have a stronger impact on the resonance amplitude than on the Q-factor. Furthermore, it is shown that optimizing the detection limit is achieved by balancing the Q-factor and amplitude, rather than maximizing the Q-factor.

Patterning Indium Tin Oxide Using Self-Assembled Monolayers as Etch Resists for Photovoltaic and Display Devices

Amare Benor et al.

Summary: This study presents a patterning method for indium tin oxide (ITO) using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and mixed organic acid etching solution. By exposing a substrate to ultraviolet light and ozone through a mask, the SAMs on the exposed regions are removed, and the bare ITO is etched with a controlled mixture of organic acids. The method is easy-to-do, cost-effective, and versatile for large-area display, photovoltaic device fabrication, and nanostructure patterning.

Active control of dielectric singularities in indium-tin-oxides hyperbolic metamaterials

Alessandro Pianelli et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the concept of dielectric singularities (DSs) in artificial multilayers and the associated phenomena. To overcome the lack of tunability in traditional hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs), the use of graphene or indium-tin-oxide (ITO) is proposed. A numerically designed ITO/SiO2 based HMM is presented with tunable wavelength, high resolution, and high Purcell factor, suitable for various applications.

Spectroscopic Ellipsometry Study on Tuning the Electrical and Optical Properties of Zr-Doped ZnO Thin Films Grown by Atomic Layer Deposition

Carolina Bohorquez et al.

Summary: This study reports the analysis of Zr-doped ZnO thin films using ellipsometry to determine their optical and electrical properties. Zr doping alters the conductivity of the films and shows minimal impact on their temperature stability. These Zr-doped ZnO films have the potential to be used in the development of thermally stable transparent conductive oxides (TCOs).

All-dielectric multifunctional transmittance-tunable metasurfaces based on guided-mode resonance and ENZ effect

Xiaoming Qiu et al.

Summary: Electrically tunable all-dielectric metasurface structures have been proposed in this study, combining indium tin oxide with guided-mode resonance to disturb the resonance wavelength in the near-infrared spectral range. The research found that in a one-dimensional structure, the transmittances at 1512 and 1510 nm changed by 20 and -14 dB, respectively, under bias voltages of 0 to 5 V, with the bilayer structure performing well in double-waveband applications.

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: A broadband omnidirectional optical Tamm state (OTS) has been achieved by utilizing a heterostructure composed of a chromium layer and a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing hyperbolic metamaterials, enabling broadband wide-angle absorption from 1612 nm to 2335 nm and incident angles from 0 degrees to 70 degrees with an absorption bandwidth of 723 nm. This lithography-free structure can be easily fabricated using current deposition techniques and has potential applications in various devices.

Summary: The study focuses on nondestructive characterization of GaN single crystals with different carrier densities using THz time-domain ellipsometry. By analyzing multiple waveforms and correcting them, a ten times higher precision in determining carrier density and mobility parameters is achieved compared to merely measuring the polarization components.
