Construction of carbon dots modified Cl-doped Bi2WO6 hollow microspheres for boosting photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation

Fanyong Yan et al.

Summary: Composite photocatalysts with broad spectral response and efficient separation of photoinduced carriers were synthesized by installing CDs on the surface of three-dimensional hollow microsphere nanophotocatalyst Bi2WO6 using the hydrothermal approach. The higher photocatalytic capability of 0.5% CDs/Cl-Bi2WO6 was observed in the degradation procedure, attributed to the doping of Cl and the presence of CDs enhancing visible light capture and suppressing electron-hole pair complexation. Scavenger-quenching assays confirmed the involvement of h(+), center dot OH, and center dot O-2(-) as the primary actors in the degradation process. A feasible degradation mechanism for trichloroethylene was proposed. This study presents a novel concept for the effective degradation of organic pollutants using composite nanophotocatalysts.

Highly efficient AgVO3/WO3 photocatalyst n-n heterojunction toward visible-light induced degradation antibiotic

Khalid A. Alzahrani et al.

Summary: In this study, WO3 nanoparticles were synthesized for the first time using a simple hydrothermal method with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). AgVO3/WO3 nanocomposites with different weight percentages of AgVO3 were successfully fabricated by impregnation-calcination processes. The 9%AgVO3/WO3 nanocomposite exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, achieving 100% degradation of Ciprofloxacin (CIP) after 120 minutes of illumination. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was attributed to the close contact between AgVO3 and WO3, which improved visible light absorption and efficient separation of charge carriers. The AgVO3/WO3 nanocomposite followed an S-scheme mechanism for charge transfer and showed high reusability and photostability. This study provides new insights into the development of highly efficient nanocomposites for environmental remediation of antibiotics.

α-Fe2O3/CeO2 S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

Khalid A. Alzahrani et al.

Summary: In this study, mesoporous CeO2 nanorods were hydrothermally synthesized and a novel S-scheme heterojunction alpha-Fe2O3/CeO2 photocatalyst was constructed. The optimized S-scheme Fe2O3/CeO2 nanocomposites displayed a superior photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 2973.2 mu molg- 1h- 1, which was 5.43 folds greater than that of CeO2 nanorods. The electron transport channels in S-scheme Fe2O3/CeO2 nanocomposites facilitated the spatial migration and separation of photocarriers. The high H2 evolution rate of the Fe2O3/ CeO2 photocatalyst was attributed to its synergistic effect, porous architecture, oxygen vacancies, small particle size and high visible light absorption ability. The durability and stability of the Fe2O3/ CeO2 nanocomposite were confirmed by the consistent H2 evolution rate after five cycles.

P25 and its components- Electronic properties and photocatalytic activities

Kunlei Wang et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic activities and electronic properties of the famous commercial photocatalyst P25, including the anatase and rutile phases, were investigated. It was found that the chemical dissolution method effectively isolated the active components, but resulted in impurification of the titania surface. Therefore, purification methods, such as thermal treatment and washing, were applied. The high photocatalytic efficiency of P25 could be explained by the intrinsic properties of anatase and rutile. The mobility of charges and lifetime of electrons in anatase were higher compared to rutile, suggesting the higher activity of anatase. Washing with NaOH and annealing also led to visible-light response of P25, indicating the potential involvement of sodium in initiating the visible-light response of titania.

The synergistic effect of anatase and brookite for photocatalytic generation of hydrogen and diclofenac degradation

Tamer M. Khedr et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the synergistic effect between brookite and anatase titania photocatalysts for hydrogen generation and organic pollutant removal. It has been found that the composite photocatalyst with 38.2% brookite and 61.8% anatase shows the highest activity, largest specific surface area, and highest light absorption ability. The new mechanism proposed for brookite-anatase composites is interparticle charge transfer excitation (ICTE) involving the migration of charges according to the heterojunction type II.
