Prediction of photogalvanic effect enhancement in Janus transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers induced by spontaneous curling

Naizhang Sun et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the generation of PGE photo-current in six Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (MXY, M = Mo,W, X,Y = S,Se,Te) based on quantum transport simulations. We build photodetectors with non-collinear electrodes along zigzag and armchair directions using the spontaneous curling induced by the relaxation of intrinsic strain in Janus TMDs. PGE photocurrents can be observed when Janus TMDs have both curled and planar structures, and the influences of polarization angle and photon energy on the photocurrents are quantitatively demonstrated. The curled photodetector shows a significant enhancement in photocurrents, which can be attributed to the reduction of device symmetry.

Janus MoSO and MoSSe Monolayers: A Promising Material for Solar Cells and Photocatalytic Applications

Hafiza Sumaira Waheed et al.

Summary: The optoelectronic properties and device absorption efficiencies of MoSO and MoSSe Janus monolayer were investigated using first-principles calculations. It was found that they possess a semiconducting behavior with ideal bandgaps for effective light absorption. The MoSO and MoSSe family showed the strongest absorption efficiency (90%) across the infrared to ultraviolet region of the light spectrum. They also have a suitable band edge alignment with water redox potentials. Thus, MoSO and MoSSe are efficient candidates for optoelectronic devices, photocatalysis, and solar cell applications.

Optical second-harmonic generation of Janus MoSSe monolayer

Ce Bian et al.

Summary: The strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) of Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayers is studied experimentally for the first time. It is found that the SHG is effectively formed from in-plane second-harmonic polarization under paraxial focusing and detection. Orientation-resolved SHG spectroscopy is used to accurately determine the crystal axes of the Janus monolayer. The SHG intensity is wavelength-dependent and can be greatly enhanced when the two-photon transition is resonant with the C-exciton state.

Nonlinear Optical and Photocurrent Responses in Janus MoSSe Monolayer and MoS2-MoSSe van der Waals Heterostructure br

Alex Strasser et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Janus two-dimensional (2D) materials with low symmetry exhibit strong nonlinear optical responses, including circular photocurrent and large out-of-plane second harmonic generation. The enhancement of out-of-plane second harmonic generation in Janus heterostructures compared to monolayer materials is attributed to interlayer coupling and interference effects. This discovery provides a unique opportunity for exploring nonlinear optical phenomena and designing configurable layered nonlinear optical materials.

The elastic, electron, phonon, and vibrational properties of monolayer XO2 (X = Cr, Mo, W) from first principles calculations

Wenyu Fang et al.

Summary: This study proposes three new kinds of 2D monolayer oxides, namely CrO2, MoO2, and WO2. The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that these monolayer oxides exhibit high mechanical and dynamic stability, semiconducting properties, and high thermal conductivity. These properties suggest their potential applications in optoelectronic devices and thermal conductive components.

Nonlinear absorption and integrated photonics applications of MoSSe

Xiaobo Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the wavelength-dependent and pulse-width-dependent nonlinear optical properties of liquid-phase exfoliated MoSSe nanosheets. The results show that the saturable absorption response of MoSSe nanosheets in the visible region is better than that in the near-infrared region, and the response under longer pulse excitation is better. Furthermore, a phase modulator integrated with a monolayer MoSSe into a silicon slot waveguide is designed and optimized to achieve high optical extinction. MoSSe exhibits satisfactory nonlinear optical properties and has excellent potential for applications in optoelectronic devices.

Angular Dependence of the Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Response in Janus Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers

Nicholas A. Pike et al.

Summary: In this study, the electronic, linear, and second-order nonlinear optical properties of Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results were compared with experimental measurements and showed relatively good agreement. It was found that Janus TMD monolayers exhibit Rashba spin splitting and mixing of second-order nonlinear susceptibility components, unlike TMD monolayers. The Rashba effect, although small, modifies the electronic band structure near gamma, making Janus TMDs potentially useful for spintronic applications. The study also revealed enhancement of the effective nonlinear susceptibility in Janus TMD monolayers, depending on the angular orientation of the experimental setup and the frequency of the measurement.

Yun-Qin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, stable MoTO monolayers and bilayers with strong piezoelectricity were theoretically identified. The vertical piezoelectric coefficient of the MoTeO bilayer is significantly larger than that of bulk GaN. The study also proposed a new method for calculating the piezoelectric coefficients of 2D materials and contributes to the understanding and development of energy conversion and touch-sensor nanodevices.
