Fatigue in multiple sclerosis is associated with socioeconomic factors

Line Broch et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between socioeconomic factors and the presence or level of perceived fatigue in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). The results showed that higher levels of education were associated with lower levels of fatigue, while receiving a disability pension, being divorced, having children, low parental education, low income, current smoking, and autoimmune comorbidities were associated with higher levels of fatigue. The study also found a higher prevalence of anxiety and depression in pwMS with fatigue.

Prevalence of fatigue and its explicative variables among people with multiple sclerosis

Nicolas Royer et al.

Summary: The study found that 57% of French multiple sclerosis patients were considered fatigued, 18% were non-fatigued, and 24% were in the grey zone. The research showed that non-fatigued patients had higher levels of physical activity, and fatigue severity was associated with physical activity. Disability, physical activity, and unemployment explained 21% of the variance in MFIS.

Associations between smoking and walking, fatigue, depression, and health-related quality of life in persons with multiple sclerosis

Turhan Kahraman et al.

Summary: Smoking in multiple sclerosis patients is associated with increased fatigue, depression severity, and decreased health-related quality of life. Smoking intensity is correlated with various symptoms, and increased pack-years of smoking is linked to worse walking ability and mental health outcomes.

Validation of the Finnish version of the Brief International Cognitive Assessment for Multiple Sclerosis (BICAMS) and evaluation of the applicability of the Multiple Sclerosis Neuropsychological Questionnaire (MSNQ) and the Fatigue Scale for Motor and Cognitive Functions (FSMC)

Paivi Hamalainen et al.

Summary: Cognitive impairment is common in MS, with BICAMS designed for brief cognitive evaluation. The study validates the Finnish version of BICAMS and shows the SDMT as the most sensitive test, revealing cognitive impairment in half of the patients. The Finnish versions of MSNQ and FSMC are useful tools for addressing cognition and fatigue concerns.
