Black Quartz from the Burano Formation (Val Secchia, Italy): An Unusual Gem

Franca Caucia et al.

Summary: The black quartzes in the Burano Formation are highly sought after by collectors due to their beautiful color, perfect crystal form, and inclusions of gypsum and graphite. These quartzes formed in original gypsum deposits and underwent diagenesis to become black. After exhumation and rehydration, they transformed into gypsum in the Burano Formation.
