Interfacial tensions of (brine + H2 + CO2) systems at gas geo-storage conditions

Zoha Dalal Isfehani et al.

Summary: Cushion gas plays a vital role in maintaining stable hydrogen withdrawal by retaining adequate reservoir pressure in hydrogen geological storage. The presence of cushion gas in the storage reservoir can affect the flow characteristics of hydrogen during injection and production cycles. However, there is a lack of literature data on the interfacial tension (IFT) between cushion gas mixed with hydrogen and brine at geo-storage conditions. This study measured the IFT of (brine + H-2 + CO2) system using the pendant drop method, and found that IFT reduced with increasing CO2 percentage, declining pressure, and increasing temperature, while linearly increasing with brine salinity. These findings provide new insights for large-scale hydrogen geological storage projects.

Sediment Instability Caused by Gas Production from Hydrate-bearing Sediment in Northern South China Sea by Horizontal Wellbore: Evolution and Mechanism

Qingchao Li et al.

Summary: Effective production of natural gas from hydrate-bearing sediments through various strategies is crucial in addressing the current global energy crisis. However, the dissociation of hydrates during gas production can weaken sediment strength and impact reservoir stability. This study thoroughly analyzed gas production, reservoir characteristics, and sediment deformation using the ABAQUS platform. The findings provide insights into the potential for commercial gas hydrate development and lay the groundwork for developing engineering measures to mitigate geological disasters in the hydrate production process.

Preliminary experimental investigation on long-term fracture conductivity for evaluating the feasibility and efficiency of fracturing operation in offshore hydrate-bearing sediments

Qingchao Li et al.

Summary: Gas hydrate is an important resource for future energy supply, but low production efficiency hinders its development. This study explored factors affecting fracture conductivity in hydrate-bearing sediments. It was found that proppant size, concentration, and hydrate saturation can improve fracture conductivity, but closure pressure needs to be appropriately reduced. A multi-factor influence model of fracture conductivity was developed, and the feasibility and efficiency of fracturing operation in hydrate reservoir were numerically evaluated. The results showed that fracturing greatly promoted hydrate dissociation and gas production. Accurately determining fracture conductivity is crucial for productivity prediction in hydrate reservoir.

Paragenetic controls on CO2-fluid-rock interaction and weakening in a macroporous-dominated sandstone

Jason D. Simmons et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of reservoir heterogeneities on chemomechanical changes in a macroporous-dominated lithofacies during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in Morrow B sandstone. The results show that the dissolution of carbonates and feldspars changes porosity, increased permeability leads to reclassification of samples into different hydraulic flow units, ultrasonic velocity decreases but tensile strength remains unchanged. Tensile strength maintenance is attributed to the low abundance and minor dissolution of siderite, the stability of quartz, and the relative position of diagenetic ankerite within feldspar.

Petrophysical changes of carbonate rock related to CO2 injection and sequestration

Danial Zareei et al.

Summary: Efficient injection of carbon dioxide and its potential effects on injection costs require an understanding of the interactions between rock and fluid during the CO2 storage process. This study used core flooding experiments to investigate the changes in porous media caused by carbon dioxide injection. The experiments revealed that the permeability and porosity significantly increased in samples composed of minerals soluble in an acidic environment, while permeability decreased in samples composed of acid-insoluble minerals. CT scanning confirmed the formation of wormholes in the samples.

Influence of sub-supercritical CO2 on pore structure and fractal characteristics of anthracite: An experimental study

Xiaolei Wang et al.

Summary: Geological storage of CO2 in coal seams is an effective method to alleviate the greenhouse effect. This study investigated the effects of sub-supercritical CO2 intrusion on coal pore structures and found that CO2 injection leads to changes in porosity and micro-minipore volume. The causes of these changes include mineral dissolution, extraction of functional groups, destruction of aromatic layers, and rearrangement of macromolecular structure. Supercritical CO2 has a greater impact on coal pore structure compared to subcritical CO2. Therefore, it is crucial to choose an appropriate injection and storage pressure of CO2.

Summary: Carbon capture and sequestration is a three-tier process consisting of carbon capture, transport, and storage. India has significant geological sequestration potential, but there are currently no operational carbon capture and storage projects in the country. The next 10-15 years will be crucial for India to achieve technological advancements in order to deploy large-scale CCS projects.

Influence of sequestered supercritical CO2 treatment on the pore size distribution of coal across the rank range

Kang Chen et al.

Summary: The influence of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) fluids on coal pore structure and mineral content is significant, leading to reductions in micropore volume, increases in average pore diameter and macropore volume, as well as alterations in mineral content. The impact of SC-CO2 is related to coal rank, with the greatest effect on lignite's macropore volume and anthracite's micropore volume. Mineral dissolution may contribute to the reduction in micropores and increase in mesopores and macropores.

Influence of supercritical CO2-H2O-caprock interactions on the sealing capability of deep coal seam caprocks related to CO2 geological storage: A case study of the silty mudstone caprock of coal seam no. 3 in the Qinshui Basin, China

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that supercritical CO2-H2O-rock interactions can lead to the formation of new fractures and reopening of existing faults in caprock, increasing the risk of CO2 leakage. To enhance the safety of CO2 geological storage, deep coal seams with thick and intact caprock should be chosen, and the CO2 injection pressure should be considered.
