Improvement in the PBF-LB/M processing of the Al-Si-Cu-Mg composition through the use of pre-alloyed powder

A. Martucci et al.

Summary: Among additive manufacturing technologies, Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam (PBF-LB/M) is known for its ability to produce complex-shaped functional parts. However, the materials available for PBF-LB/M are limited, and research into new high-performance Al-based alloys is ongoing. One promising solution is the use of pre-alloyed powders, which have shown better performance compared to mixed powders in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties.

Effect of process parameters and grain refinement on hot tearing susceptibility of high strength aluminum alloy 2139 in laser powder bed fusion

Joe Elambasseril et al.

Summary: High strength aluminum alloys are widely used in transport and aerospace industries, but their additive manufacturing can be challenging due to hot tearing. This study investigated the elimination of hot tearing in Al2139 alloy through process parameter selection and the addition of a grain refiner. The research found that increased energy density and grain refinement can reduce or eliminate hot tearing in Al2139 during laser powder bed fusion manufacturing.

I. Bitharas et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors directly investigated the impact of laser-material interaction on laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process using simultaneous in-situ synchrotron x-ray and schlieren imaging. By quantifying the morphological changes during the process, the instability of the process was revealed, and the effect of the powder layer on process stability was explored. These findings contribute to the design of process windows at higher power and speed, and provide a potential method for monitoring process stability.

Synergic strategies to improve the PBF-LB\M processability of a cracking-sensitive alloy

A. Martucci et al.

Summary: Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam/Metals (PBF-LB/M) is a promising additive manufacturing process for producing functional components with complex shapes. However, the high thermal gradient and thermally induced stresses during the layer-by-layer scanning and high cooling rates can lead to undesirable cracking and delamination. This study aims to investigate strategies for processing non-standard compositions and found that the synergistic use of appropriate process parameters and support structures can prevent cracking and achieve fully dense specimens, even without platform heating.
