Study of the anticorrosive behavior of samarium as a corrosion inhibitor in multilayer systems for aluminum alloy

Jose Antonio Cabello Mendez et al.

Summary: This study presents a multilayer system for protecting aluminum alloy AA3003 using samarium compounds as a corrosion inhibitor and a continuous SiO2 layer. The new coating method eliminates the need for vacuum chambers, making it suitable for industrial production. The results show that the combination of samarium compound deposition by atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) and silica deposition provides effective corrosion protection. XPS analysis indicates that the APPJ method increases the concentration of Sm(OH)3, which contributes to the protective behavior. The findings also highlight the optimal processing times for the immersion method and APPJ method.

Effect of rare earth Nd on the microstructural transformation and mechanical properties of 7xxx series aluminum alloys

Jianpeng Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of incorporating the rare earth element Nd on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloys. The results indicate that the addition of Nd significantly refines the grain and dendrite sizes of the alloy and effectively suppresses recrystallization behavior during hot extrusion and solution treatment. The addition of Nd improves the high-temperature mechanical properties of the alloy, with the tensile strength reaching 396.2 MPa at 120? for the alloy with 0.26 wt% Nd addition.

Analysis of the Ce(III) chloride, Ce(III) nitrate, and Ce(III) propionate as corrosion inhibitor of the aluminum alloys in NaCl solution

Bojana Radojkovic et al.

Summary: In this study, green corrosion inhibitors including Ce(III) chloride, Ce(III) nitrate, and Ce(III) propionate were tested to evaluate their inhibitory effect on 7049 aluminum alloy in NaCl solution. The protective ability of Ce(III) propionate was found to be significantly higher compared to Ce(III) chloride and Ce(III) nitrate. The presence of Ce, propionate anions, and Al-O bonds in the inhibitive layer on the alloy surface was confirmed. Density-functional theory methods were used to optimize the geometry of the Ce propionate complexes as corrosion inhibitors.

Cerium chloride and L-arginine as effective hybrid corrosion inhibitor for 5052 aluminum alloy in 3.5% NaCl solution

X. T. Xu et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical approaches were used to investigate the corrosion inhibition behavior of a hybrid CeCl3 and L-Arg inhibitor for 5052 aluminum alloy in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The highest inhibition efficiency of 83.78% was achieved with the addition of 3 mM CeCl3 and 4 mM L-Arg. The hybrid inhibitor exhibited a mixed-type inhibition behavior and significantly improved the pitting corrosion resistance of 5052 aluminum alloy. The formation of CeO2/Al2O3-L-Arg complex films hindered the diffusion of Cl- ions and blocked the active sites of corrosion reaction.

Cerium Compounds Coating as a Single Self-Healing Layer for Corrosion Inhibition on Aluminum 3003

Jose Antonio Cabello Mendez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation of cerium hydroxide and evaluates its capacity as a corrosion inhibitor on aluminum substrates. By immersing the substrate in a solution of cerium nitrate and hydrogen peroxide, the cerium particles are deposited on the surface. The morphological and chemical analysis of the coatings were performed, and the electrochemical corrosion behavior was studied. The results show that the presence of cerium particles can both inhibit and promote corrosion, depending on the immersion time and concentration.

Influence of Rare Earth Samarium/Ytterbium Salt on Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior of Aluminum-Based Anode for Batteries

Bangan Shi et al.

Summary: The effects and mechanisms of samarium acetate and ytterbium acetate on enhancing the corrosion performance of aluminum-based anode in aluminum-air batteries were studied in this work. The results showed that these two compounds are ideal electrolyte additives, and they inhibit the self-corrosion of the aluminum alloy effectively, with the optimal concentration being 200 mg/L. Corrosion inhibitors reduce the self-corrosion speed by suppressing the microcathodic reaction, thus promoting the improvement of battery discharge performance. Furthermore, a mutual adjustment effect was observed when mixing samarium acetate and ytterbium acetate in different proportions, resulting in increased battery capacity densities of the anode.

Effect of Cerium Tartrate on the Corrosion Resistance of Epoxy Coating on Aluminum Alloy and Its Mechanism

Xueping Chen et al.

Summary: The inhibitory effect and mechanism of cerium tartrate as a pigment in epoxy coating on AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy in a NaCl solution were studied. The addition of cerium tartrate significantly improved the protective performance of the epoxy coating, possibly due to the modification effect by cerium salts and the synergistic inhibitory effect by tartrate group and cerium ions. The double-layer coating showed similar protective properties to the single-layer coating, indicating that creating a protective film on the aluminum alloy substrate can contribute to improving the protection performance of the coating.
