Precipitation transformation pathway and mechanical behavior of nanoprecipitation strengthened Fe-Mn-Al-C-Ni austenitic low-density steel

Y. F. An et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the precipitation sequence of Fe-28Mn-11Al-1C-5Ni austenitic low-density steel and its influence on mechanical properties. The results reveal the transformation pathway of kappa' -carbides and B2 particles under different aging conditions. This research is meaningful for guiding the design of new generation dual-nano precipitation austenitic lightweight steel.

Optimizing the microstructure and mechanical performance of Fe-Ni-Cr- Al high entropy alloys via Ti addition

Zhenqiang Xing et al.

Summary: The effect of Ti content on the microstructure and mechanical properties regulation for Fe45Ni30-xCr15Al10Tix high entropy alloys (HEAs) with a duplex FCC/BCC structure is investigated. The introduction of Ti transforms the inter-dendric structure and changes the morphology of precipitates. This leads to an increase in the ultimate tensile strength of the HEAs and a maintained uniform elongation, showing excellent strength-plasticity synergy.

Unveiling the effect of Hf-(Mo,W) addition on the coarsening, agglomeration, and dissolution behaviour of γ'-Ni3Al precipitates in model Ni-based superalloys

Rasim Eris et al.

Summary: The atomic size of alloying elements is the primary factor affecting the strengthening of Ni-based superalloys. This study investigates the influence of Hf element addition and its co-additions with Mo(W) elements on the microstructural and mechanical properties of model Ni80Al15Hf5 and Ni80Al15Hf2.5Mo(W)2.5 superalloys. It is concluded that replacing a portion of Hf addition with Mo(W) can reduce the participation tendency of Hf and Mo(W) elements, and the co-addition of Hf and W leads to better mechanical strength.

Precipitation and its hardening behavior in an austenitic steel with different strain-induced structures

D. Y. Liu et al.

Summary: Dynamic plastic deformation of solid solution austenitic steels induced various structures including dislocations, nanotwins, and nanograins, followed by aging treatment to investigate their precipitation and hardening. Microstructural characterization showed different distribution of gamma prime nanoparticles, eta nanoprecipitates, and their effect on strength in coarse grains and nanograins.

Cr-promoted formation of B2+L2 1 composite nanoprecipitates and enhanced mechanical properties in ferritic alloy

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: The critical role of Cr on nanoprecipitates and the mechanical property of Fe-Ni-Al-Mn ferritic steel were studied in this research. The two types of nanoprecipitates in the Cr added alloy were characterized through advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography techniques. The atomic-scale analysis revealed the structures and chemistry of the precipitates, and the first-principles calculations provided insights into the nucleation processes. The addition of Cr improved the strength of the steel through the formation of composite nanoprecipitates.

Effects of V addition on microstructure and pseudoelastic response in Fe-Mn-Al-Ni alloys

Kai Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of 1.5 at.%V addition on the quench sensitivity of Fe-Mn-Al-Ni shape memory alloys (SMAs) and the precipitation behavior of NiAl precipitates. The results show that V addition significantly inhibits the precipitation process of non-transforming gamma-phase. Polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Al-Ni-V SMAs achieve fully reversible thermoelastic martensitic transformation without quenching, while single crystal Fe-Mn-Al-Ni-V SMAs obtain high number-density and relatively large-size coherent beta-NiAl precipitates to strengthen the matrix.

Microstructure characteristics and mechanical performance of Fe-Cr-Ni-Al-Ti superalloy fabricated by powder metallurgy

Xiaosheng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a Fe-Cr-Ni-Al-Ti ferritic superalloy was fabricated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and the types and evolution of precipitates were investigated. The results showed that the precipitates could be completely dissolved during solution treatment at 1100 degrees C, while they underwent morphological evolution and coalescence after aging at 700 degrees C. The alloy exhibited high tensile strength and elongation, but failure may occur at the initiation of cracks.

Precipitation behavior of coherent nano-ordered particles in Fe-Mn-Al-Ni shape memory alloys with different Ni contents

Liqiu Yong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Ni content on the precipitation behavior of nano-ordered particles in Fe-Mn-Al-Ni alloys. It was found that D0(3) nano-particles were precipitated with a Ni content of 2.1 at.%, while coherent B2 nano-particles were precipitated with Ni contents of 4.0-10.8 at.%. The average diameter of the B2 nano-particles increased linearly with increasing Ni content.

Enhancing the properties of Al-Ni added medium Mn steel by tailoring B2-NiAl precipitates through aging treatment

Biraj Kumar Sahoo et al.

Summary: The effect of aging treatment on the strength-ductility combination of intercritically annealed medium Mn steel was studied. The results showed that both one-stage and two-stage aging treatments significantly improved the strength-ductility product of the steel. One-stage aging resulted in the formation of nano-sized NiAl precipitates, while two-stage aging led to phase-selective precipitation of varying sizes of NiAl. The two-stage aged sample exhibited a combination of TRIP-TWIP effect and precipitation strengthening, leading to sustained three-stage work-hardening during deformation and improved strength-ductility combination.

Outstanding high-temperature strength of novel Fe-Cr-Ni-Al-V ferritic alloys with hierarchical B2-NiAl precipitates

Kanghyun Park et al.

Summary: We designed and developed a novel ferritic alloy that exhibits excellent high-temperature yield strength enhancement through coherent hierarchical precipitates. The composition of the alloy was tailored by adding Vanadium to a Fe-Cr-Ni-Al alloy to control the size and volume fractions of coherent B2-NiAl precipitates. Experimental and theoretical approaches were used to examine the evolutions of microstructures, mechanical properties, and strengthening mechanisms at 973 K. It was found that the addition of Vanadium reduces the lattice misfit and precipitate size, and a hierarchical structure within the precipitate plays a vital role in enhancing the yield strength at 973 K.

The role of alloying elements in NiAl and Ni3Ti strengthened Co-free maraging steels

S. Zeisl et al.

Summary: Some precipitation hardened steels achieve a beneficial combination of ultra-high strength and toughness by using a combination of the intermetallic eta-NiAl and beta-Ni3Ti phases. The phase composition and volume fraction of the precipitates strongly depend on the content of alloying elements such as Ti, Al, Cr, and Mo. This study aims to reveal the influence of Ti and Al variations, as well as Cr and Mo, on the precipitation hardening and austenite reversion in Co-free maraging steels based on the Fe-12Ni alloy system.

Segregation of alloying elements at the bcc-Fe/B2-NiAl interface and the corresponding effects on the interfacial energy

Xueyun Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution tendency of alloying elements in the Fe/B2-NiAl interface, finding that certain elements such as La, Cr, and Mo decrease the critical nucleation radius and nucleation barrier of NiAl nuclei in the dilute solid solution FenNiAl. The results suggest that these alloying elements energetically prefer to segregate to the interface, leading to changes in interfacial energy.
