Enhancing the surface integrity and SCC resistance of 304 austenitic stainless steel by pre-stress grinding

Zhuangzhuang Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of pre-stress grinding technique to improve the surface integrity and enhance the stress corrosion crack resistance of stainless steel materials. The experimental results demonstrate that pre-stress grinding significantly improves the integrity of the treated surface, leading to enhanced stress corrosion crack resistance. The strengthening effect of pre-stress may have an upper limit, and it is crucial to ensure that the applied stress does not exceed the yield strength of the material.

Combined effects of machining-induced residual stress and external load on SCC initiation and early propagation of 316 stainless steel in high temperature high pressure water

Wenqian Zhang et al.

Summary: The combined effects of machining-induced residual stress and external load on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) initiation and early propagation of 316 stainless steel in high temperature high pressure water environment were explored. It was found that residual stress promoted SCC initiation, while external load further contributed to continuous crack propagation. The study also revealed a strong correlation between biaxial stress state and SCC susceptibility, with a high susceptibility observed at 300 degrees C water environment.
