Ultra-Productive Upcycling CO2 into Polycarbonate Polyols via Borinane-Based Bifunctional Organocatalysts

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: We report the synthesis of commercially attractive low molar mass polycarbonate polyols obtained through CO2 and epoxide ring-opening copolymerization using borinane-based bifunctional organocatalysts and chain transfer agents. These catalysts exhibit high selectivity and productivity for both poly(cyclohexane carbonate) polyols and poly(ether propylene carbonate) polyols. The molar mass of the resulting polycarbonates can be precisely controlled, showing great potential for large-scale preparation of CO2-based polyols.

A new biodegradable CO2-based poly(ester-co-carbonate): Molecular chain building up with crosslinkable domain

Jiaxin Liang et al.

Summary: Poly(propylene carbonate phthalate) (PPC-P) is a biodegradable polymer with improved thermal and mechanical properties compared to poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC). However, PPC-P has melt viscosity issues at high temperature, limiting its use in foaming and blowing materials. To address this issue, crosslinkable PPC-P was designed and synthesized by introducing vinyl moieties. The crosslinking conditions were optimized and the effects on crosslinking density were investigated. The crosslinked PPC-P had controllable melt flow rates, nearly unchanged thermal properties, improved tensile performances, and satisfactory transparency, providing a foundation for its application as foaming and blowing materials.

Borinane-based organoboron catalysts for alternating copolymerization of CO2 with cyclic ethers: improved productivity and facile recovery

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: This research describes the design and synthesis of organoboron catalysts for the alternating ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of CO2 with cyclic ethers. The performance of these catalysts was assessed by considering various parameters, such as the type of boron center, the distance between the boron center and the ammonium cation, and the size of the substituents of the cation. Among all the boron-based catalysts, borinane-based catalyst 5 showed the highest productivity in the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides. Additionally, catalyst 5 could be easily recycled and used as a difunctional initiator. Density Functional Theory computation provided insights into the mechanism of the bifunctional catalyst-mediated CO2 copolymerization and highlighted the importance of the type of boron centers in the overall performance.

The effect of mixed soft segment on the microstructure of thermoplastic polyurethane

Yongyin Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, the hard segment content was fixed and thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers with one-soft segment and bi-soft segment were synthesized and characterized. The results indicated that introducing PCL was more effective than PTMG in promoting microphase mixing and crystallization, and reducing microphase separation, due to the stronger carbonyl group in PCL forming hydrogen bonds with -NH bond. Additionally, PCL-HPU showed significantly improved tensile strength and elongation at break, with good retention of IPA resistance compared to other formulations.

Performance tailorable terpolymers synthesized from carbon dioxide, phthalic anhydride and propylene oxide using Lewis acid-base dual catalysts

Jiaxin Liang et al.

Summary: The study successfully conducted terpolymerization of carbon dioxide and phthalic anhydride with propylene oxide using metal-free and economical Lewis pairs. Different organic bases coupled with triethyl borane were able to optimize the terpolymer structure and properties. Additionally, the incorporation of phthalic anhydride effectively enhanced the thermal and mechanical properties of the resulting terpolymers.
