Adherence to the DASH Diet and Risk of Hypertension: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Xenophon Theodoridis et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of adherence to the DASH diet on hypertension risk. Results from a systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 studies showed that high adherence to the DASH diet was associated with a lower risk of hypertension. These findings support the importance of lifestyle changes in reducing hypertension risk.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.

Assessing 48 SNPs in Hypertensive Paediatric Patients and Young Adults with Review of Genetic Background of Essential Hypertension

Mirjam Mocnik et al.

Summary: Essential hypertension in paediatric patients and young adults is on the rise, mainly due to obesity-related hypertension. The clinical differences between obese hypertensive and non-obese hypertensive individuals are evident, but the pathophysiology is still not fully understood. Genetic tests showed significant differences in allele frequencies between the two groups in five single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The reported genetic differences could provide insights into the complex pathophysiology of early-onset obesity-related hypertension.

A height-weight formula to measure body fat in childhood obesity

Maria Rosaria Licenziati et al.

Summary: The estimated fat mass and percentage of body fat calculated by a height-weight equation showed reasonable agreement with the results from a BIA equation. Both fat mass and percentage of body fat were significantly associated with BMI Z-score, with a stronger correlation observed when using the height-weight equation. This formula can be used as a surrogate for estimating body fat when instrumental tools are not available.

Obesity, metabolic syndrome, and primary hypertension

Mieczyslaw Litwin et al.

Summary: Primary hypertension is the main form of arterial hypertension in adolescents, closely related to metabolic syndrome and visceral obesity. Metabolic syndrome is also observed in adolescents with primary hypertension. Obesity and metabolic abnormalities can increase the risk of hypertension and target organ damage.

Birth weight, childhood obesity and risk of hypertension: a Mendelian randomization study

Jingwen Fan et al.

Summary: While there is no evidence of a link between birth weight and essential hypertension, childhood obesity has been found to have a causal relationship with an increased risk of essential hypertension, providing valuable insights for the development of prevention strategies.
