Affordable de novo generation of fish mitogenomes using amplification-free enrichment of mitochondrial DNA and deep sequencing of long fragments

Ana Ramon-Laca et al.

Summary: Biomonitoring surveys utilize metabarcoding tools to identify species through sequencing results against public genomic databases. However, incomplete mitochondrial genomic reference data and unsuitable existing sequence data pose challenges in species level resolution. This study presents a cost-effective workflow using long fragment sequencing and mitochondrial DNA enrichment to generate complete fish mitogenomes, allowing for the expansion of fish mitochondrial databases to nonmodel or understudied species.

Description of two new species of apple snail (Ampullariidae: Pomacea) from Peruvian Amazonia

Andre Ampuero et al.

Summary: Two new species of apple snails, Pomacea penai sp. nov. and Pomacea reevei sp. nov., were described and found to be used as food resources in Peruvian Amazonia. Anatomical and conchological features were used to distinguish between the two species. Pomacea penai sp. nov. is characterized by variable shell morphology, prominent to immersed spire, apical penis sheath gland covering 1/3 of the penis sheath, elongated basal gland, broad proximal prostate, reduced stomach septum, green eggs, and inhabits flooded areas, creeks, and oxbow lakes. Pomacea reevei sp. nov. has a large shell ranging from 81-137 mm, grey broad penis sheath, small apical penis sheath gland, basal gland covering 1/3 of the penis sheath, tall stomach septum, white eggs, and is found in deep lentic water bodies.

The mitochondrial genome of the semi-slug Omalonyx unguis (Gastropoda: Succineidae) and the phylogenetic relationships within Stylommatophora

Leila Belen Guzman et al.

Summary: This study reports the first complete mitochondrial genome of the semi-slug Omalonyx unguis, identifying a potential origin for mitochondrial DNA replication and conducting phylogenetic analyses to place Succineoidea as a sister group of Helicoidea + Urocoptoidea. The gene arrangement of O. unguis was found to be identical to another species of Succineoidea, indicating unique rearrangements within Stylommatophora.
