Dysfunctional breathing diagnosed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing in 'long COVID' patients with persistent dyspnoea

Isabelle Fresard et al.

Summary: Among 51 patients living with 'long COVID' and persistent dyspnoea, cardiopulmonary exercise testing revealed that nearly one-third of patients had dysfunctional breathing (DB), a larger proportion had respiratory limitation (RL), and only a small number had O2 delivery/utilisation impairment (D). Patients with DB were typically younger, had milder initial infections, better transfer capacity for carbon monoxide, higher oxygen consumption, better ventilatory efficiency slope, and higher oxygen saturation compared to those with RL.

Diagnostic tests and subtypes of dysfunctional breathing in children with unexplained exertional dyspnea

Claudine Peiffer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether the Nijmegen questionnaire and hyperventilation provocation test (HVPT) are able to differentiate specific subtypes of dysfunctional breathing and discussed the relevance of the inappropriate hyperventilation subtype itself.

Validation Criteria for PETCO2 Kinetics during the Hyperventilation Provocation Test in the Diagnosis of Idiopathic Hyperventilation Syndrome

Nathalie Yael Pauwen et al.

Summary: The study re-evaluated the HPTest for diagnosing HVS, suggesting using the HPTest for diagnosis, which can more reliably reflect CO2 homeostasis mechanisms and respiratory center response to stimuli. The research found that with accurate PETCO2 kinetics, HVS patients could be diagnosed, while complaints in the NQ may lead to 24% false positives/negatives.

Mobilizing Carbon Dioxide Stores An Experimental Study

Lorenzo Giosa et al.

Summary: The study found that CO2 stores can be dynamically regulated within 48 hours, showing fluctuations. The correlation between previous CO2 storage dynamics and the rise in Pa-CO2 levels is inversely related.

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing in the Assessment of Dysfunctional Breathing

Maria F. Ionescu et al.

Summary: Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is a condition that affects individuals in various situations, including athletes, and can be diagnosed and managed using cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Proper recognition of DB is important for treatment and can lead to significant benefits for individuals.

Comparative analysis between available challenge tests in the hyperventilation syndrome

Angelica Tiotiu et al.

Summary: The study found that HVPT is a better diagnostic tool than CPET for HVS, with most HVS patients presenting comorbidities of anxiety and asthma. There were significant differences in ventilatory parameters during HVPT and CPET, and exercise did not induce abnormal reduction in PETCO2.
