Summary: A systematic review and subgroup analysis showed that fecal microbial transplantation (FMT) may be an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), especially through gastroscopy or nasojejunal tube. Furthermore, FMT appears to be more effective for IBS patients with constipation symptoms, and the freshness of the fecal transplant and bowel preparation also influence FMT efficacy.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the Gut Microbiome: A Comprehensive Review

Summary: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. It has a high prevalence and disease burden, affecting the quality of life, work productivity and healthcare utilization and costs. IBS is associated with various conditions, including psychiatric comorbidities. The pathophysiology involves dysregulation of the brain-gut axis, leading to changes in intestinal motility, gut permeability, visceral hypersensitivity and gut microbiota composition. This article aims to explore the role of gut microbiota in the pathophysiology of IBS, factors influencing the gut microbiome, and the potential of microbiome as a treatment target.

Summary: This article conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. The results showed that FMT did not significantly improve the overall symptoms of IBS patients, but FMT operated through invasive routes significantly improved global IBS symptoms, while FMT delivered via oral capsules had a negative impact on IBS patients.

Summary: This study systematically evaluates the efficacy and safety of fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. The results show that FMT does not have a statistically significant effect on the severity of IBS symptoms or the number of respondents. Even in the groups that showed relatively significant improvement, the effects wore off over time and re-administration had a low success rate.
