Deciphering the quorum-sensing lexicon of the gut microbiota

Rita A. Oliveira et al.

Summary: The coexistence of gut microbiota and the host is a symbiotic relationship that benefits both parties. Bacteria can communicate through chemical signaling, such as quorum sensing, to regulate group behaviors for host colonization. However, most studies on microbial-host interactions regulated by quorum sensing have focused on pathogens. This article focuses on the emerging studies of quorum sensing in gut microbiota symbionts and their group behaviors for mammalian gut colonization, as well as the challenges and approaches to uncover the molecule-mediated communication mechanisms.

Cross-feeding in the gut microbiome: Ecology and mechanisms

Elizabeth J. Culp et al.

Summary: Microbial communities are influenced by both positive and negative interactions, including competition and mutualism. In the mammalian gut, these interactions have significant impacts on host health. Cross-feeding, a cooperative interaction where metabolites are shared between different microbes, plays a crucial role in establishing stable, resistant, and resilient gut communities. This review explores the ecological and evolutionary implications of cross-feeding, as well as mechanisms and impacts of cross-feeding at different trophic levels.

The Probiotic Combination of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei JY062 and Lactobacillus gasseri JM1 Alleviates Gastrointestinal Motility Disorder via Improving Gut Microbiota

Shasha Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei JY062, Lactobacillus gasseri JM1, and their combination on mice with GI motility disorder induced by loperamide. The probiotic combination was found to alleviate GI motility disorder better by increasing the secretion of excitatory GI regulators and decreasing the secretion of inhibitory GI regulators, except vasoactive intestinal peptide. The intervention also increased the number of interstitial cells of Cajal, the expression of SCF/c-kit protein, the abundance of beneficial bacteria, and improved the contents of short-chain fatty acids in mice's cecum contents.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in intestinal homeostasis and metabolism in mice after MA administration and exercise intervention. The composition of gut microbiota, levels of SCFAs and amino acids were assessed. The results showed that exercise intervention modulated changes induced by MA administration, with differences observed in dominant microbiota, amino acids and SCFAs.

Effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for treating functional constipation: An overview of systematic reviews

Jun-peng Yao et al.

Summary: This overview evaluated and summarized clinical evidence on the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for treating functional constipation (FC). The results suggest that acupuncture may be more effective than sham acupuncture and anti-constipation drugs in improving bowel movements and quality of life. However, the current studies have limitations and inconsistent evidence, calling for more rigorous and methodologically sound systematic reviews to draw definitive conclusions.

Isolation and identification of mucin-degrading bacteria originated from human faeces and their potential probiotic efficacy according to host-microbiome enterotype

Heng Yuan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to isolate human-derived mucin-degrading bacteria and investigate their potential probiotic characteristics and their effects on the bacterial community and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in different enterotypes of the host. The isolated bacteria exhibited resistance to heat and acid, and were able to modulate the bacterial community and SCFA production. The findings suggest the importance of personalized probiotic application based on enterotypes.

Summary: This study characterizes the gut microbiome of healthy captive marmosets and marmosets with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It shows that marmosets with IBD have decreased alpha diversity and a shift in the ratio of Bacteroides:Prevotella copri compared to healthy marmosets. The study also demonstrates that source-specific microbiomes can be retained despite standardized diets and husbandry practices in marmosets.

Proper regulation of intestinal flora balance, increasing diversity of flora, and reducing opportunistic pathogens can help improve constipation.

Electroacupuncture ameliorates intestinal inflammation by activating α7nAChR-mediated JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in postoperative ileus

Na-Na Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigated how electroacupuncture stimulation at the hindlimb region ameliorates inflammation in postoperative ileus (POI). Results showed that electroacupuncture suppressed intestinal inflammation and promoted gastrointestinal motility by activating the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (alpha 7nAChR)-mediated JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in macrophages. Furthermore, hindlimb region stimulation inhibited the expression of GABA(A) receptor in dorsal motor nucleus of vagal (DMV) neurons, leading to suppression of inflammation via vagal efferent output.
