Care by general practitioners for patients with asthma or COPD during the COVID-19 pandemic

Corinne Rijpkema et al.

Summary: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on general practitioners' (GP) care for patients with asthma and/or COPD is largely unknown. To describe the impact of the pandemic on asthma or COPD-related GP care, we analysed routinely recorded electronic health records data from Dutch general practices and out-of-hours (OOH) services. The contact rates for asthma and/or COPD were significantly lower in GP practices and OOH services during the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the pre-pandemic period, with an increase in telephone contacts and a decrease in face-to-face contacts.

Trust in Healthcare during COVID-19 in Europe: vulnerable groups trust the least

Johannes Beller et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, people who are older, female, have lower education levels, are unemployed, have worse general health, face financial difficulties, experience higher mental distress, and feel more lonely tend to have lower levels of trust in the healthcare system. Specifically, mental distress, income difficulties, and unmet healthcare needs consistently predict lower trust in the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic across European regions and countries. Targeted prevention and intervention efforts should be implemented for vulnerable subgroups.

Do consultants do what they say they do? Observational study of the extent to which clinicians involve their patients in the decision-making process

Ellen M. Driever et al.

Summary: This study assessed whether consultants adhere to their self-reported decision-making style when making decisions with patients. The results showed that there was limited patient involvement, regardless of the consultants' reported decision-making style. This suggests that consultants may be lacking in the skill of shared decision making.

Shared decision-making in the Netherlands: Progress is made, but not for all. Time to become inclusive to patients

Trudy van der Weijden et al.

Summary: Dutch initiatives promoting shared decision-making (SDM) have achieved some success in daily clinical practice, but there is still a need for cultural change. Addressing physicians' limited application of SDM and providing incentives for their efforts, as well as including patients with limited health literacy, are important steps to further enhance SDM.

The impact of public responses toward healthcare workers on their work engagement and well-being during the Covid-19 pandemic

Wen Shan et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the public responses towards healthcare workers (HCWs) and how these responses impact their work engagement and well-being. The results show that negative public responses decrease HCWs' work engagement and well-being, while positive responses increase them. Occupational calling serves as an important mechanism that explains the impacts of public responses on HCWs. The study also highlights the significance of human resource management in bridging positive public responses towards HCWs.

The role of illness perceptions on medication nonadherence among patients with hypertension: A multicenter study in indonesia

Sofa D. Alfian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of illness perception on medication nonadherence among hypertensive patients in Indonesia. The results showed that treatment control, patient's comprehension of hypertension, and patient's emotions were significantly associated with medication nonadherence. Therefore, educational interventions should be tailored based on patients' perception of their illness.

Response rates of online surveys in published research: A meta-analysis

Meng-Jia Wu et al.

Summary: The study finds that the number of online surveys in published research has been steadily increasing over the years, with an average response rate of 44.1%. The results indicate that sending surveys to a clearly defined and refined population positively impacts the response rate. Additionally, using other types of surveys in conjunction with online surveys, pre-contacting potential participants, and using phone calls as reminders can also yield a higher response rate.

Group-randomized trial of tailored brief shared decision-making to improve asthma control in urban black adults

Maureen George et al.

Summary: The study evaluated a novel brief shared decision-making intervention called BREATHE and found that participants who received BREATHE showed better asthma control and perceived greater engagement in shared decision-making. This promising intervention, delivered by clinicians during routine office visits, offers a pragmatic approach to improving asthma outcomes and shared decision-making in a health disparity population. Future research should focus on training other healthcare team members in shared decision-making to address important implementation challenges.

Summary: This study identified seven effective interventions to enhance medication adherence in adult patients with asthma and/or COPD. A practical TAI Toolkit was developed to help healthcare professionals select appropriate interventions. The Toolkit was well-received by professionals and further research is needed to test its validity and effectiveness.

Defining Optimal Medication Adherence for Persistent Asthma and COPD

David A. Stempel et al.

Summary: Adherence to prescribed medications for chronic respiratory disease is crucial for successful management, but there is little consensus on how to measure adherence, optimal adherence, and goals of appropriate medication utilization. Criteria may vary when studying medication utilization at the patient or population level. Consistent medication use in chronic respiratory disease is associated with better outcomes, and shared decision-making is one strategy to achieve appropriate levels of adherence, requiring negotiation and compromise by both patient and provider.
