Comparison of Visual Fixation Trajectories in Toddlers with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Typical Development: A Markov Chain Model

Francesco Masedu et al.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) alters visual attention and search strategies, as shown by eye-tracking paradigms. This study compared the eye gaze patterns of toddlers with ASD and typical development (TD) using a face-object task. Markov chain modeling revealed different transition probabilities between areas of interest (AOIs) for the two groups, with 'No-stimulus fixation' playing a critical role in discrimination. Results highlight the difficulties of individuals with ASD in engaging in stimulus exploration and suggest the potential of incorporating this dimension in clinical evaluations.

Measuring social orienting in preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder using cartoons stimuli

Francois Robain et al.

Summary: Eye-tracking studies reveal a decreased social orienting (SO) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) when watching realistic stimuli, but no difference when watching cartoons. However, finer visual exploration parameters show atypical gaze patterns related to early developmental delay even with minimal social stimuli.

Age at autism spectrum disorder diagnosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis from 2012 to 2019

Maarten van't Hof et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on studies published between 2012 and 2019 to determine the current average age at diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder globally. The findings showed the average age at diagnosis to be 60.48 months, with a lower average age of 43.18 months for children aged 10 or below. Various factors that may influence the age at diagnosis were reported by studies, often with conflicting or inconclusive results.
