Cupressus arizonica Greene: Phytochemical Profile and Cosmeceutical and Dermatological Properties of Its Leaf Extracts

Nora Tawfeek et al.

Summary: In this study, the phytochemical profile of Cupressus arizonica Greene leaf extracts was analyzed, and it was found that these extracts contained various compounds with antioxidant, anti-aging, and antibacterial activities. The aqueous extract showed significant antioxidant potential and inhibited enzymes related to skin remodeling and aging. It also suppressed biofilm formation and decreased motilities of a common skin pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, C. arizonica leaves can be considered as a promising candidate for skincare application.

Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Parkinson's Disease: Pathogenesis and Therapeutic Strategies

Sadegh Moradi Vastegani et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder, and its pathogenesis is not completely understood. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are major causes and central events in the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. This study discusses the impact of environmental, genetic, and biological factors on mitochondrial dysfunction and explores potential therapeutic targets and strategies, such as reactive oxygen species generation, calcium overload, inflammation activation, apoptosis, mitophagy, mitochondrial biogenesis, and dynamics, as well as mitochondrial transfer/transplantation, microRNAs, stem cells, photobiomodulation, diet, and exercise.

Summary: Vaccinium dunalianum Wight is an important healthy tea resource in China, rich in phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Its extracts show neuroprotective effects against H2O2-induced PC12 cell damage, possibly through upregulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes expressions and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

Cellular and Molecular Events Leading to Paraquat-Induced Apoptosis: Mechanistic Insights into Parkinson's Disease Pathophysiology

Wesley Zhi Chung See et al.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. The loss of dopaminergic neurons and the presence of alpha-synuclein protein aggregates are key pathological features in PD. The pathogenesis of PD is still not fully understood, but multiple factors may trigger apoptotic neuronal cell death. Laboratory studies have shown that exposure to the herbicide paraquat can induce many PD pathological features, and long-term exposure to paraquat may increase the risk of developing PD in humans.

Iron Complexes of Flavonoids-Antioxidant Capacity and Beyond

Zdenek Kejik et al.

Summary: Flavonoids, common plant natural products, can suppress ROS-related damage through chelation of transition metal ions, with iron being the most significant. Their interaction with Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions can significantly affect their biological properties. Special biological effects of their iron metallocomplexes, such as the inhibition of iron-containing enzymes, have been discussed in this review.

Iron Dysregulation and Inflammagens Related to Oral and Gut Health Are Central to the Development of Parkinson's Disease

Marthinus Janse van Vuuren et al.

Summary: Neuronal lesions in Parkinson's disease are linked to alpha-synuclein-induced cell damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, with the enteric nervous system being particularly vulnerable. Factors such as neuroinflammation, systemic inflammation, iron dysregulation, and gut dysbiosis play crucial roles in the development and progression of PD. Bacterial inflammagens may fuel systemic inflammation and contribute to the nucleation of proteins like alpha-synuclein, suggesting potential novel treatments for PD.
