Acute and chronic kidney complications in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Giulio Rivetti et al.

Summary: Children with type 1 diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of kidney involvement, with some of the risk occurring at the beginning of the disease and the rest being related to poor glycemic control and the development of diabetic kidney disease.

Acute kidney injury in infants hospitalized for viral bronchiolitis

Pierluigi Marzuillo et al.

Summary: We investigated the prevalence and associated factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized patients with viral bronchiolitis. Among the retrospective enrollment of 139 children, AKI was found in 15 patients. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, preterm birth, low birth weight, and high hematocrit levels were significantly associated with AKI. This study highlights the importance of monitoring kidney function in viral bronchiolitis patients and identifying risk factors for AKI.

Renal Amyloidosis: Presentation, Diagnosis, and Management

Reena Gurung et al.

Summary: More than 35 amyloid precursor proteins have been identified, with many having affinity for the kidneys. Renal amyloidosis, most commonly seen in AL and AA amyloidosis, is characterized by proteinuria and progressive renal dysfunction. Successful management involves targeting the underlying amyloid process and providing supportive care.

Efficacy and safety of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers for IgA nephropathy in children

Pedro Alves Soares Vaz de Castro et al.

Summary: A small number of studies suggest that ACEI/ARB may have efficacy in reducing proteinuria in children with IgAN, but there are limitations such as a scarcity of studies and heterogeneity.

Acute Kidney Injury in Children with Acute Appendicitis

Pierluigi Marzuillo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and factors associated with acute kidney injury in pediatric patients with acute appendicitis. The findings revealed that approximately 7.4% of patients with acute appendicitis experienced acute kidney injury. Fever, vomiting, dehydration, and elevated levels of C-reactive protein and neutrophils were identified as predictive factors for acute kidney injury.

When should we start and stop ACEi/ARB in paediatric chronic kidney disease?

Eugene Yu-hin Chan et al.

Summary: RAASi is the main therapy for CKD in both adults and children, but evidence for its use in children is lacking, and its role and impact in advanced CKD remain controversial.

Acute kidney injury in children hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis: prevalence and risk factors

Pierluigi Marzuillo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis (AGE). Results showed that 24.6% of patients had AKI, with longer duration of symptoms, dehydration, and lower serum bicarbonate levels being independent predictors.

Summary: Most children with onset of T1DM may develop AKI and/or RTD, especially if presenting with DKA. Over time, the physiological and biochemical parameters of AKI/RTD normalize in all patients.

Acute kidney injury in children hospitalized for community acquired pneumonia

Pierluigi Marzuillo et al.

Summary: About 1/5 of children hospitalized for CAP present with mild AKI, with a longer stay for those with more severe AKI. Attention should be paid to kidney health of children with CAP, especially in the presence of higher duration of symptoms before hospitalization, severe pneumonia, and higher serum CRP levels.

The Impact of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors or Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers on Clinical Outcomes of Acute Kidney Disease Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Jui-Yi Chen et al.

Summary: The exposure to ACEi/ARB after AKI is associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality, recurrent AKI, and progression to incident CKD. However, patients should also be closely monitored for the higher risk of hyperkalemia associated with ACEi/ARB usage.
