Litter-of-origin traits and their association with lifetime productivity in sows and boars

William L. Flowers

Summary: Litter-of-origin variables, such as birthweight and immunocrit levels, have an impact on lifetime productivity in pigs. Improving the quality and quantity of colostrum consumption can enhance productivity, and preweaning growth and weaning weight are positively associated with reproductive organ development and lifetime productivity. Strategic management techniques like cross-fostering and supplemental feeding can be used to improve these factors.

Effects of medium chain triglycerides on hepatic fatty acid oxidation in clofibrate-fed newborn piglets

Jinan Zhao et al.

Summary: Supporting the anaplerotic and ketogenic fatty acids (FA) could potentially impact FA oxidation and modify the metabolism of acetyl-CoA via alteration of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle activity. However, it has no significant effect on the hepatic FA oxidative capacity induced by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARa). The availability of carnitine is crucial for maintaining FA oxidation during the neonatal period.

Factors affecting the production of quality ejaculates from boars

W. L. Flowers

Summary: The production of high-quality boar ejaculates depends on the Sertoli cell population established before puberty and their effective functioning after sexual maturity. Factors affecting Sertoli cell mitosis have a greater impact on sperm production than those affecting spermatogenesis. Birthweight, colostrum intake, pre-weaning nutrition, and post-weaning interactions between boars and humans are all important factors influencing the quantity and quality of ejaculates. Furthermore, the seasonal effect on semen quality, the impact of ambient temperatures, and the supplementation of vitamins and minerals are significant considerations for improving sperm production.

Biomarkers predictive of long-term fertility found in vaginal lipidome of gilts at weaning

Kayla M. Mills et al.

Summary: By analyzing vaginal lipid profiles at 21 days postnatal, this study found that infertile replacement gilts had lower abundance of certain fatty acids and higher abundance of free fatty acids compared to high fertility gilts. Additionally, infertile gilts had higher levels of eicosapentaenoic acid, a precursor of prostaglandins. The potential of using a panel of lipids captured with vaginal swabs to predict the reproductive efficiency of replacement gilts shows promise for future research in this area.
