Diabetic retinopathy for the non-ophthalmologist

Timothy H. M. Fung et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a microangiopathy caused by the chronic effects of diabetes mellitus. Healthcare professionals often work in isolation to provide specialized care for people with diabetes. It is important for healthcare professionals of all specialties to be aware of developments in all aspects of diabetes management. In this article, the epidemiology and natural history of diabetic retinopathy are discussed, as well as its assessment and diagnosis. Principles of diabetic retinopathy management and potential future treatments are also outlined.

GLP-1 and GIP receptor signaling in beta cells - A review of receptor interactions and co-stimulation

Ashok Mayendraraj et al.

Summary: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) are two types of G protein-coupled receptors that play important roles in insulin secretion. GLP-1R agonists have been successfully used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity, while GLP-1R-GIPR co-agonists, particularly tirzepatide, show promise in improving glycemic control and weight reduction. However, the pharmacodynamic mechanisms and downstream signaling pathways of GLP-1R-GIPR co-agonists remain to be fully understood.

Circ_0001897 regulates high glucose-induced angiogenesis and inflammation in retinal microvascular endothelial cells through miR-29c-3p/transforming growth factor beta 2 axis

Yudan Gong et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults, and circ_0001897 has been implicated in its development. Under high glucose conditions, upregulation of circ_0001897 enhances cell proliferation, inflammation, and angiogenesis. Knockdown of circ_0001897 attenuates these effects. Mechanistically, circ_0001897 acts as a sponge for mir-29c-3p, which in turn regulates the expression of transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGFB2).

Exendin-4 alleviates β-Amyloid peptide toxicity via DAF-16 in a Caenorhabditis elegans model of Alzheimer's disease

Xiangwei Song et al.

Summary: Exendin-4 attenuates the toxicity of A beta (1-42) in Alzheimer's disease through multiple mechanisms, including reducing its expression and accumulation, and enhancing the activity of superoxide dismutase. It exhibits neuroprotective effects and has potential therapeutic implications for AD.

HbA(1c) Change and Diabetic Retinopathy During GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Cardiovascular Outcome Trials: A Meta-analysis and Meta-regression

M. Angelyn Bethel et al.

Summary: The study found that HbA(1c) reduction was significantly associated with increased retinopathy risk in GLP-1RA CVOTs. However, no relationship was found for SBP or weight. The magnitude of HbA(1c) reduction was correlated with retinopathy risk in people with diabetes.

Update in the epidemiology, risk factors, screening, and treatment of diabetic retinopathy

Kuan-Yu Lin et al.

Summary: Despite advancements in treating diabetic macular edema and retinopathy, limited medical resources contribute to lower fundus examination rates, delaying diagnosis and treatment. Implementation of automated screening programs and identification of specific biomarkers are crucial for early detection, reducing the prevalence of poor vision and blindness.
