Nanomechanics with plasmonic nanoantennas : ultrafast and local exchange between electromagnetic and mechanical energy

Andrea V. Bragas et al.

Summary: In this work, the physics of nanoresonators and their acoustic vibrations are reviewed, with frequencies in the range of a few to tens of GHz. Accurate determination of their oscillation frequencies allows them to act as mechanical nanoprobes, measuring local mechanical moduli and performing high-resolution imaging. The damping mechanisms and the role of the substrate are also discussed when nanoresonators are integrated into platforms and probed individually. The importance of manipulating hypersonic surface acoustic waves with nanoantennas and their potential applications in acousto-plasmonic devices operating in the GHz range and at nanoscale is also emphasized.

Probing gigahertz coherent acoustic phonons in TiO2 mesoporous thin films

E. R. Cardozo de Oliveira et al.

Summary: We report mesoporous titanium dioxide-based acoustic resonators with resonances up to 90 GHz and quality factors from 3 to 7. Numerical simulations show good agreement with picosecond ultrasonics experiments. We also study the effect of changes in the speed of sound on the resonator's performance, which can be induced by liquid infiltration into the mesopores. These findings constitute the first step towards engineering reconfigurable optoacoustic sensors based on mesoporous thin films.

Mechanical properties of ordered mesoporous oxides thin films

Diego F. Lionello et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of ordered mesoporous thin films and the experimental techniques used to measure them are discussed in this review. The relationship between hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) with structural features such as porosity (P) are analyzed for several mesoporous systems. Additionally, tribological and fractomechanical features are assessed.

Mesoporous ordered films via self-assembly: trends and perspectives

Plinio Innocenzi

Summary: The synthesis of ordered mesoporous films via self-assembly is a significant achievement in nanoscience, but controlling the complex chemical-physical phenomena caused by solvent evaporation remains challenging. While there have been advancements in basic research, more understanding is needed on the self-organization mechanism and the physics and chemistry of mesoscale porosity.

Acoustic Vibrations and Energy Dissipation Mechanisms for Lithographically Fabricated Plasmonic Nanostructures Revealed by Single-Particle Transient Extinction Spectroscopy

Man-Nung Su et al.

Summary: Acoustic vibrations in lithographically fabricated Au and Al nanostructures were studied using single-particle transient extinction spectroscopy, revealing a blue shift in frequency due to the presence of a substrate and providing insights into the binding strength between Au nanostructures and the substrate. Comparison of the acoustic properties and quality factor of Au and Al nanostructures suggests internal defects dominate the energy dissipation pathway in these polycrystalline structures. This research sheds light on the optomechanical properties of nanostructures fabricated by electron-beam lithography.

Structural and Mechanical Properties of Silica Mesoporous Films Synthesized Using Deep X-Rays: Implications in the Construction of Devices

Paula Y. Steinberg et al.

Summary: This study presents the structural and mechanical properties of porous silica thin films obtained by sol-gel method under high intensity XR exposure. The results demonstrate the dependency of these properties on the XR dose and thermal treatment applied. The findings are crucial for understanding the transport mechanisms in silica porous films and integrating them into lab-on-a-chip applications.
