Radiation from Side-Emitting Optical Fibers and Fiber Fabrics: Radiometric Model and Experimental Validation

Aaron Reupert et al.

Summary: Two models are derived in this study to predict the radiation field of side-emitting optical fibers. The models, based on the radiometric approximation, take into account the longitudinal and angle-dependent emissions. Experimental validation is provided, showing the relevance of the longitudinal characteristic and angular dependency in the fiber's radiation. A combination of model and measurements is used to predict the illumination performance of side-emitting fibers and fiber fabrics.

Technological Challenges in the Development of Optogenetic Closed-Loop Therapy Approaches in Epilepsy and Related Network Disorders of the Brain

Bram Vandekerckhove et al.

Summary: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder with limited treatment options, but optogenetic implants offer promise by targeting aberrant neuronal circuits with high resolution and specificity. Challenges exist in chronic implantation, including enzymatic degradation and glial encapsulation, but engineering efforts are being directed towards optimizing optrode design for long-term treatment success.

First-order fiber Bragg grating inscription in indium fluoride fiber using a UV/Vis femtosecond laser and two-beam interferometry

Ismael Chiamenti et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a new method for creating highly reflective first-order fiber Bragg gratings using femtosecond lasers, and highlights the advantages of using soft indium fluoride-based fibers for inscription. Thermal annealing results in a stable thermal shift in the Bragg wavelength, indicating a potential extension of the operational range to 5 µm.

Machine learning for real-time optical property recovery in interstitial photodynamic therapy: a stimulation-based study

Abdul-Amir Yassine et al.

Summary: This study enhances the robustness of iPDT against tissue optical property variations by using machine learning models to recover patient-specific OPs from light dosimetry measurements and re-optimizing diffuser optical powers in real time. Simulations on virtual brain tumor models demonstrate a significant reduction in uncertainty in predicted light dosimetry for all tissues involved.
