Real-time joint traffic state and model parameter estimation on freeways with fixed sensors and connected vehicles: State-of-the-art overview, methods, and case studies

Yibing Wang et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the real-time joint traffic state and model parameter estimation on freeways using data from fixed sensors and connected vehicles. It investigates the performance improvement of traffic state estimation by combining both types of sensing data, and examines the role of online model parameter estimation in this process. The paper provides an overview of the current state of freeway TSE and presents three approaches to design freeway traffic state estimators using mixed sensing data. The designed estimators are evaluated using NGSIM data, providing answers to several key questions.

Traffic Estimation and Prediction via Online Variational Bayesian Subspace Filtering

Charul Paliwal et al.

Summary: With the increasing use of smart devices, transit passengers today demand higher quality services in the form of real-time traffic updates and accurate ETA predictions. However, public transit agencies and private transportation companies are often resource-constrained and lack access to city-wide traffic data, necessitating sophisticated real-time traffic interpolation and prediction algorithms.

Data fusion for estimating Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram in large-scale urban networks

Elham Saffari et al.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the MFD for a large-scale urban network by combining probe vehicle data with an unknown penetration rate and full-scale approximate traffic data based on loop detector data. The Bayesian fusion method outperforms the baseline method in average flow and density estimations, especially showing significant improvement in average density estimations.

A Physics-Informed Deep Learning Paradigm for Traffic State and Fundamental Diagram Estimation

Rongye Shi et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the limitations of model-driven and data-driven approaches for traffic state estimation and introduces a hybrid method, PIDL + FDL, which combines both components. Experimental results demonstrate that PIDL + FDL outperforms advanced baseline methods in terms of estimation accuracy and data efficiency while properly learning the underlying fundamental diagram relation.

Analysis of the Information Entropy on Traffic Flows

Zhiyuan Liu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new quantity based on information entropy to reveal the uncertainty of traffic flow, and analyzes its relationships with other key quantities. The study finds that the information entropy of traffic flows can be accurately measured and observed, and its relationships with space mean speed and density can be described by linear and parabolic functions, regardless of traffic volume. Inspired by information entropy, a new quantity called speed entropy is proposed, which reflects different patterns of traffic conditions. The analysis of information entropy provides a new pathway to better understand complex traffic flows from the perspective of uncertainty, potentially enhancing existing traffic data analysis models.

Freeway Traffic Control in Presence of Capacity Drop

Yibing Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of coordinated ramp metering and mainstream traffic flow control on freeway traffic, highlighting the importance of capacity drop on the performance of traffic control measures. The research reveals that the proper use of control measures can prevent bottleneck activation and increase total network exit flow, contradicting common misconceptions about ramp metering.

An s-shaped three-parameter (S3) traffic stream model with consistent car following relationship

Qixiu Cheng et al.

Summary: A new S3 traffic flow model was proposed in this study to represent the relationship between flow, speed, and density in highway traffic, which was calibrated using real-world traffic data. This study also derived a consistent car-following model based on the proposed S-shaped speed-density function.

Calibration of stochastic link-based fundamental diagram with explicit consideration of speed heterogeneity

Lu Bai et al.

Summary: This study establishes a stochastic link-based fundamental diagram considering the effects of speed heterogeneity and rainfall intensity on traffic flow. Real-world traffic data from Hong Kong in 2017 was used, and a two-stage calibration based on Bayesian inference was proposed, with results showing that the random-parameter model considering speed heterogeneity performed better.
