New Approaches to Deep Phenotyping in Addictions

Ashley L. Watts et al.

Summary: Two recently developed frameworks, NIDA PhAB and HiTOP, provide unique opportunities for deep phenotyping in addictions. NIDA PhAB focuses on addiction-related processes, whereas HiTOP focuses on clinical phenotypes relevant to a broad array of psychopathology. Together, they provide broad and deep characterization of people diagnosed with substance use disorders, addressing limitations of traditional classification systems.

What's in a name? A data-driven method to identify optimal psychotherapy classifications to advance treatment research on co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders

Denise A. Hien et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the optimal categorization methods for interventions targeting PTSD, SUD, or PTSD+SUD populations. Through literature search and expert survey, it was found that there are many overlapping categorizations. The most favorable categorization method appears to be trauma-focused and non-trauma focused. Revision of the language and terminology for treatment classification is necessary in this advancing field.

Attention bias modification for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yaming Hang et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that Attention Bias Modification (ABM) has significant effects on clinician-rated anxiety symptoms and attention bias towards threat, but not on self or parent-reported anxiety measures. ABM is more effective as a stand-alone treatment, with younger age and more training sessions associated with greater reduction in clinician-rated anxiety symptoms.

Development and Feasibility Study of an Addiction-Focused Phenotyping Assessment Battery

Lori A. Keyser-Marcus et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of the NIDA PhAB in terms of ease of administration and time burden. Through research on 595 participants, it was found that the majority of eligible participants were able to complete all assessments, with an average time of 3 hours. Participants showed high satisfaction with the study, with over 90% willing to participate in similar studies and recommend the study to others.
