Factors associated with weight gain prevention in young adults with serious mental illness

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine factors associated with weight gain prevention among young adults with serious mental illness who participated in a randomized controlled trial evaluating lifestyle interventions. The study found that lower baseline BMI was significantly associated with weight gain prevention at six and 12 months, and greater increases in weight control strategies were significantly associated with weight gain prevention at six and 12 months.

The Challenges of Parenthood for Female Surgeons: The Current Landscape and Future Directions

Summary: Although surgical training programs have achieved gender parity, female surgeons still face challenges related to pregnancy and parenthood. These challenges include occupational risks, stigma, inadequate parental leaves, lack of support for lactation and childcare, and insufficient mentorship on work-family integration. These challenges result in a higher risk of infertility among female surgeons and can also negatively impact recruitment, retention, and career satisfaction in the surgical workforce. The focus of a recent conference was on addressing these challenges and providing recommendations for policy change to better support maternal-fetal health and the needs of surgeons with young children.
